polly's mice

I got so excited looking at jeanne's hug I didn't check out the mice until just now. They are cute as all get out. What a wonderful fun quilt. The other scrappy quilts are great too. Scrappy are my favorite quilts. Yours are really good. Taria

I remember my mother's quilts so well. Remember tracing the pattern of the Irish Chain with my fingers, remember studying the appliquéd butterfly one and remembering the dresses that the b'flys wings once were. I have that sort of hope for the mouse quilt. Maybe one day a great-grandchild will snuggle in it and be tickled and comforted by one-eared mice. Yes. I like to hope for that. Thanks, Taria. Polly

Polly, I was going to comment on your wonderful quilts last night and fell asleep...lol. The mousies are darling and unique, so special, I know whoever receives it will cherish it forever. Made me smile everytime I looked at it! Loved your scrappy quilts also...you are so talented with color besides lining everything up. Tell me please, is the one a 'flying geese' pattern block? Is it sewn on the diagonal? Donna

You know, Donna, that's absolutely Nothing but half-square triangles. I made about 600 of those rascals, each with a partner of something in the toast, ivory, beige sort of family. I've always always wanted to make one but didn't know if my enthusiasm would survive through the repetition. Truth is - since there were so many fabrics to enjoy, it wasn't tedious at all. Polly

Thanks Polly, I'm back to the website to take another look. Man,

600, huh? I don't know if I'd have the stick-to-it-ness to tackle it but it sure is neat! Donna

Those began at 3½". How I survived the boredom was it was always a secondary project. There were lots of fluffy ducks and QOV going on while the mice quilt was underway. When I was feeling 'one beer short of a 6-pack', I'd just cut 3½" strips and then squares - or I'd stitch a few or trim a few. If someone had said I had to finish it before I enjoying quilting something else, I would have turned in my quilting badge. That quilt pattern (not that it's really a pattern) may be even older than the log cabin. There are lots of museum beauties that are simply HST. Polly

thanks Polly, i'd think starting with 4 7/8 inch sqs it would build a bit faster, with less of them to make and still have enough for that charm you get with lots of HSTs. j.

I don't know Jeanne I would be doing 5" but that is because *I* know it works better for me to trim to size, but I'm sure polly doesn;t need to worry about that sort of thing....lol

fair enough, Dee. i wasnt thinking about the variation in seams sewn. i agree the five inch size is better if one isnt precise, as probably some of us arent(me included). that 4-7/8inch is the formula size to finish at 4inch in the quilt. (for those who are wondering what the heck Dee and I are going on about, probly most of you figured it out tho). now i'm on to reading more here today. then i have some googling to do for Polly. then i have some other replys to emails and other online things i have to sort thru and reply to some things i'm sure. its a never-ending slog somedays just getting to all the places online that need checking. keeps me out of trouble and highly distracted from things i dont want to think about but sometimes i cant help it. thanks for that reminder, Dee. j.
