question about a Christmas tree skirt

I know, I know it is over, but I like to plan ahead. Don't ask me the number of projects I have planned but they are being prioritized and I have to get well first also, which by the way I have double pneumonia, in both lower lobes, today he did try to get me to go the hospital but I said, I am too hyper from the steroids to go have to stay in bed and without my computer, you are insane. No I didn't say it but I thought it.

For next Christmas, I want to make a tree skirt. I am sick of using an old red house coat that was mine when I was in high school and yes I have been out for over 30 years. LOL Also, believe you me my arm wouldn't even go in the sleeve now I am sure. I have only found two or three tree skirt patterns on line and I do not like any of them, no offense if you have them but I have a certain thing in mind and am wondering if anyone knows where I can find a pattern. I have a couple of projects in mind prior to making it so I have time to order the pattern and look at it and study it but it will need to be fairly easy, although I want it round it may have to be square. :-) I want it to be made of a lot of different Christmas fabrics and be more like a crazy tree skirt, no rhyme or reason to it, just something that is Christmasy, is that a word? Anyone know where I can find such a pattern, have one they need to get rid of, not the skirt but the pattern, I am willing to buy it if that is legal.

Most of my projects won't get done this year but if I don't get at least one thing quilty done, then I am going to have to start mailing out my small stash to you gals and guys in order to make some room to live.

I have decided that my first project is going to be using the fat quarters and pattern that I got in my holiday luncheon package, I so love that pattern and the FQ's are great. Then I want to make Sugar a blanket, but she can't have it until my sister's puppies get big enough not to carry it off. She is back outside, but she is happier there just as long as I remember to turn the heat on in the dog house on cold nights.

Any suggestions as to where I can find something similar to what I described is more than welcome and I thank you in advance.

You folks are the greatest,

Cool! I was just looking up tree skirts today and bought a bunch of 75% off Christmas fabrics from Jo-Ann. I want to make something like this:

Easy to just sketch out on paper round circle size you like. Draw lines from one edge to the other intersecting in the center and piece with different fabrics in each pie shape. You could also break up each pie piece with lots of different sections and use even more fabrics.

Try it, you have nothing to lose if it's just on paper. 2007 is the year to experiment : )

I made a very simple one about 25 years ago. I cut 3-1/2" squares of red, green, blue, and yellow fabrics and sewed them together into a large square. I cut it into a circle, and made an opening to fit around the tree. I backed it with a piece of an old sheet and tied it with red yarn. I added a ruffle around the outside edge and bound the edges of the opening. You can see it at I have sometimes thought about making a more elaborate one, but it is so often covered with gifts that I don't bother with a new one.

How to make a patchwork Christmas tree skirt

Also, a lot of the pattern companies (Simplicity, Butterick, etc) have patterns for Christmas Tree skirts - and I'm thinking at least one of them must have a patchwork pattern - maybe?

My mom has a tree skirt that I am going to make next for my own tree, only it isn't really a tree skirt. It is a panel square dance skirt!! It is full and fluffy and has a wonderful little ruffley bottom and it fits around the base of the tree just perfectly since it is much fuller than a regular tree skirt. Since it is made in panels you can incorporate anything really simply into it as far as multi fabrics or crazy quilting or whatever tickles your fancy.

my goodness, Jacqueline, i do hope you dont push yourself too hard, rest girl. double pneumonia is nothing to mess with, eh. now then... if you go to google and use the image search there... i just did and got pages and pages of pix of 'christmas tree skirts'. even spotted a crazy patchwork one, easy peasy i'd think. there are so many different ways to make them, who'da'thunk. as Denny said, you could sketch out your own design/pattern having a full 12 months to now get it made. should be easy given so much time, just go slow and think each step thru. ya still got rctq to ask questions re whatever design you are considering. cheers from a still tired mama in the south pacific, jeanne

That sounds like how I made mine, except I used smaller squares. It looks like mine were cut about 3-1/2" square.
