Question about Size of King Size Quilt

I started making a king size quilt and couldn't stop adding panels. It's now 134 x 134. Would this be too big or would it just hang over to the floor? It's going to be a gift. I feel like I should take it apart and start putting it together in a different way. I also feel a little dumb. Thanks. Barb of S. Florida

Might not be a problem at all, Barb. Just off the top of my head, a good measurement for kingsize is about 110". That only gives you an extra 12" on each side. How that will look will depend on the mattress + box springs (if any) and how high the bed is off the floor. Some of those pillowtop mattresses can be as much as 18" deep (no kidding) . . . Before you go to removing anything, can you find out more about the bed? Polly

If you are hand quilting it- good luck. If you are machine quilting it- good luck. If you are sending it to a longarmer- good luck. That is HUGE. But it's a very good size for a thick mattress!

I'll bet it's just gorgeous if you couldn't stop and had to keep making it bigger and bigger- the ugly ones you quit asap! I honestly wish you well getting it finished.... oh! and the *miles* of binding... groan! LOL

Don't know how you'll do it, but Lots of quilting! The more you quilt, the more texture. Should reduce it by a couple of inches at least. Make sure you u´se cotton batting, then it will shrink another 3% in the wash. Won't be too big at all! Roberta in D

If at all possible, get an actual measurement of the vertical of floor- to-top-edge-of-mattress of that particular bed. Add that number to all 4 sides of the standard mattress-top number for a king-size bed, and you will know how large a bedspread would be for that bed -- to the floor on 3 sides plus extra at the top for a pillow-tuck. Numbers for mattress tops are indeed standard, but how high the bed actually is from the floor is not standard at all since some mattresses are thicker, since bed frames are of different heights, and since some people use risers with their beds. I have found that even using a feather bed on top of my mattress makes a difference in how a traditional bedspread fits, and, of course, the quilting itself takes up a bit of area and thus "shrinks" the overall measurement of any quilt by a small but perhaps significant percentage.

It is likely to hang nearly to the floor. When I planned my queen size, I wanted it to hang to the floor. IIRC my measurement from the floor to bed top, across the bed, and back to floor level was 120 inches.

You may not be able to find a batting that size, but it is a simple thing to add more batting as you just need to tack more onto a king size one. I suggest one of the flat cotton batts, or a very low loft one, if you plan to quilt this monster sized quilt on your home sewing machine. I plan to hand quilt the center panel of my floor length queen and machine quilt the rest because after the top was finished I was sure that reaching the middle of it with the machine was just going to be too much work for me because I want a nice puffy batting. Just measured our Christmas King Size quilt that is flat on the bed to the floor on 3 sides. No extra allowance for pillows. It's 124" square.

Butterfly (just got the post--sure have a lot of catch up posts this AM and only 44 new ones. My ISP says they have NO problem--like I believe them)

I've done a Kingsize with a big overhang, and the problem I find is the two bottom corners. These are not fitted at all - its just a giant square, consequently I am inclined to trip over these 'extensions'. They really do stick out.

If you laid yours on a bed just to see the overhang on two sides, you would be able to see if the corners will be a problem

Thanks for all the suggestions. I actually took the monster apart today and am going to sew it back together tomorrow hopefully. It's my first attic windows quilt and I made 80 blocks. I'm gotten pretty proficient at making them now. That was the fun part. I made 4 big panels and 1 smaller one and that's when it became the quilt from hell. I now have it pinned to 110" x 120". It's a surprise for my son and DIL so I couldn't ask for measurements of their bed. (They live out of state). I had the design in my head, but unfortunately, it didn't work out on the fabric. I'll know better next time. I still have to sew the backing together and the batting hasn't arrived from Hancocks as yet, so that will be my next challenge. I'm going to send it out for quilting so I can get it out of the house and I don't have to see it for awhile. If I ever learn to post pictures, I'll post it. Thanks. Barb of S. Florida

If this turns out to be a huge problem, just mail it to me and I will take care of it! I have a K bed in SC and a Q in FL. Barbara in SC during the summer and Central FL during the winter

I don't know about anyone else, but we have a queen size bed and we use a king size quilt - it hangs down about an extra 12 inches on each side, but when it comes to keeping comfy and warm ... well, it's 12 inches extra on each side to cuddle under!

I should probably mention that my hubby is a bit overweight - so he takes up more than his fair share - if we had a queen size quilt, I'd never get any covers! Personally, to me, I care more about keeping warm 'n' cozy at night than worrying about how it hangs a bit extra over the side of the bed! :)

I'd hate to see you go to all the trouble of ripping apart your beautiful top only to have your friend wish that she had the extra few inches on a cold night! :)

Just my two cents ...

Connie, we too have a queen size bed with a king size cover ( in our case we use a feather doona).

Saves those night time tugs and pulls, although DH usually sleeps in the middle of the bed.

I think ours must be related! Mine hogs the bed, the covers - the only thing he doesn't hog is the sheets (why that is, I have no idea!!)!

After 10 years of never having covers, I had to get a King size comforter (made a KS quilt later on) - I was freezing my butt off! Since he had the covers and therefore HE was warm, it only made sense to lower the thermostat to 60 at night! Arrrggghhh!!! :)
