I'm trying to stipple a quilt using variegated thread that comes on a small cone. The problem is the bobbin thread wants to show through *and* I'm skipping stitches. I've read some tips about this before, but can't remember them LOL!
Advice, please?

Make sure you have the right needle, and lower the tension for the top thread if the bobbin is poking through. Is the needle a new one? Recheck your threading too. HTH
These may or may not be related.
First, are you using the same weight of thread in the bobbin? It's much easier to balance the tension if you are. If so, you'll either need to loosen your top tension or tighten your bobbin tension until the top and bottom thread meet inside the quilt sandwich, not on the top or bottom.
Once you get your tension straightened out, try doing the same quilting on a small sample piece. Are you still skipping stitches? If so, I first change the needle, as a dull or bent needle can cause that. If that doesn't fix it, try a heavier (higher number) needle. You may need to speed up your machine, too -- if you are trying to move the quilt while the needle is still down, the stitch can skip. A faster machine speed can help this.
If that doesn't do the trick, check the obvious stuff -- rethread the machine, rethread the bobbin, clean out the lint, hold your tongue at the right angle, cross your toes...
Hope that helps!
