Quilt birthing happy dance.

Thought you might like to see my latest whole cloth quilt, made for my friend who is undergoing treatment for the big C.

It is based on the Welsh whole cloth tradition and has elements from some of the quilts made by my Great Aunt who lied in Port Talbot, S. Wales until she died in 1964.

Some of her quilts are on exhibition at the Quilt Museum in York. She was a very special lady.

This quilt has the Kona Bay fabric I couldn't bear to cut up on one side, with a purple batik I didn't think would go with anything on the other. The batting is silk and the thread is YLI pink and King Tut Yellow. (I hated the King Tut, far too thin and whippy)

I'm pretty pleased with it over all. I've got my stitches down to

9/10 to the inch. The aim was for reversible, and it is close. It is much better now it is washed, but I am still highly critical of the back stitches being shorter than the front. Any suggestions on that score are particularly welcome.

It's beautiful Nel. I smiled that you have made a quilt in the Welsh tradition, when you live near to the home of the Durham tradition! No racial discrimination there then >g< . In message , Sartorresartus writes

Oh my, that is gorgeous. My dear, if you didn't tell us then nobody on earth would ever know that the back stitches were different from the front. And, if they are, so what? I think you should stop measuring and know that when you make something that the stitches are filled with love and creativity and with YOU. They are beautiful and the quilt is gorgeous and your friend is fortunate.

Nel: Lovely quilt ... it will be a real comfort to your friend. I send her good health wishes. No suggestions for the hand quilting. Do be sure to talk to Ragmop about that, though! Pat in Virginia

What Lovely stitches. An apology is silly.

I love hand quilting, although I am starting to do some of my more casual quilts by machine. So few people in my guild do hand work, and the speed with which those machine guys bring things to show n tell is discouraging. At least here I can find a few more people in my neck of the woods.

Nel,

Your hand-quilting is absolutely gorgeous! You are being far too critical of your work. Mary will be thrilled.

Thank you very much for your kind comments.

I wanted the quilt to be completely reversible, hence my request for sorting the back stitches. It wasn't to be mean to myself. I am aware that even Amy Emms OBE only got through to the back for 70% of her stitches, and that was on a bed quilt so this would not matter at all.

But this isn't a bed quilt, it's a lap quilt, so the underside will always be seen, especially as the jolliest fabric is on the reverse.

And seeing other people's work just makes me want to do one of two things, give up, or improve. But I'm hooked, so the former ain't going to happen. :-D

That is just lovely. how I envy the 9-10 stitches to the inch! Very well done and a great tribute to your Great Aunt. She would surely be smiling now!
