quilt on frame problem

I'm fairly new to machine quilting on a frame. I pinned a zigzag hug on my Little Gracie II this week. The borders are lined up nicely but the center has way too much fullness to lay straight. I think it is because of all the bias edge seams thoughout. Is there a good trick to get it to lay flatter for quilting?

Hi,

I hope that some of the more experienced machine quilters will jump in and give you professional suggestions. I can only tell you of a couple that have worked for me. If you don't have too much "fluff" try adding an extra piece of batting in the center. I have done this more than once :-( There was one time when I didn't really notice the fluff until I was almost done quilting. I had to put so much extra in that I swore the quilt would have a built in pillow on one end. There was a little height in evidence but the quilt was square! Another one that I tried on the recommendation of a friend is to douse the top with spray starch and then steam it - just hover over the fullness with your steam iron. That did not work as well for me as the extra batting did.

Whatever you choose to do, I wish you well. It will look great!

I don't know if this thought will be one bit helpful or not but thought I'd just throw it in to the discussion. ( And, I don't do any sort of longarm.) The one time I had a major 'fluff' in the center of a quilt, I realized I'd put the backing and batting down stretched tightly ... and just gently laid the quilt top over those. As it was basted, the backing/batting 'let go' and the quilt top poofed. The quilt is beautiful but it was a battle every inch of the way. Polly

It seems like that was the last place I pin/basted, Roberta. The other option would have been to start over and crawling around a quilt on the floor is tough. Actually, the crawling isn't all that bad but the getting back up? Now there's a challenge. Polly
