Quilting advice needed please

I've been working on a quilt for my sister for awhile. Now my sis is having some "issues" and needs to have this finished and wrapped around her as soon as I can get it quilted and bound. I'm breaking lots of rules with this one since I'm almost finished quilting the outer borders so I'm sort of working my way to the center. I wanted to do some really special quilting on this but there is just no time left.

I've quilted most of the straight lines, the sashing is quilted with just stitch in the ditch to keep everything together and stabilized. I'm not too worried about the blocks but would welcome any advice for those. I have some terrific variegated thread I plan to use for some special quilting in the sashing. I'm hoping for something I can do quickly and easily that will show her how special she is to me.

Sandy, if you're there, you may remember when I first found the group I was staying with my sister in Henderson. I was just starting to quilt and was making a quilt as a wedding gift for my daughter, 8 pt stars.

Please take a look at the top and tell me what you think would look good in the sashing. Thanks

That's a beautiful quilt. I know however you quilt it, the quilting will be perfect.

Thank you. I know by now there is no such thing as perfect and I know she will like it no matter what. I just want something really special and fairly easy for the sashing.

Hi Judie! Yes, I do remember that! :) Now about this quilt ... since it's for your sister (is this the same sister who lives in Henderson?), and since she's going through some tough times right now, what about quilting some meandering hearts through the sashing? You wouldn't have to mark anything, and they'd convey a lot of feeling.

I did something similar (not in sashing) in this quilt: ; if you scroll down to the detail shot, you may be able to see what I mean. I stuck little paws inside the hearts, but you could leave yours plain or do double hearts (one inside the other) or whatever you like.

Sis is in Henderson right now visiting and has been looking around for a house. She and her husband moved to North Carolina but have been wanting to go back home, too far from kids, grandkids and just plain homesick I think.

She has doctor visit today and will be flying back to Raleigh tomorrow. She will probably have surgery sometime next week.

I do really like your idea and do like the double hearts. I've sort of been doing that in the border but just a few random hearts and stars. (mostly what I know how to do)

I do like your Tuppence quilt but then all of your work is beautiful. I sure wish I could do feathers right now but haven't got time for tracing and afraid to just do free motion feathers with out a lot of practice.

Thanks, Sandy.

How about doing Flying Geese throughout the sashing Judie. It is extremely quick to do and can be done in a continuous line - going up one side in one direction and back on the other side completing the triangles. I have done it several times and I love the result. You have Flying Geese and a lot of half-square triangles in the blocks. It's a very pretty quilt. Sorry about your sister. . Thanks so very much for the wishes. She'll be needing all the good thoughts, wishes, and hopes she can get. She's going to need some pretty invasive surgery. And then probably some other not very fun things.

She and her husband have had their house up for sale for months now and they really need to get it sold and get back to what is "home" for them. I wish they could afford to just walk away and move right now.

I'm really hoping I can keep on quilting and get this in the mail to her by the end of this weekend. I'm pretty much decided on the hearts and even did a little practice in the border where it's really hard to see.

I posted a picture of the border quilting with the practice hearts and think this is what I will do in the sashing. Bigger hearts maybe and more little loops since I really like the look of Sandy's. Although for some reason my hearts always want to start at the bottom.

I hope it all goes very well and that her recovery will be quick and painless.

Judie, free motion feathers are actually easier to do than the ones you mark! You don't have to worry that you aren't hitting the line you drew, for one thing, and they go very quickly. That's actually the first kind I learned to do.

You're very welcome, Judie. Good luck! :)
