"Quiltmaker" & Bonnie Hunter Article

There is an article on Bonnie Hunter's "Scrap User's System" in latest copy of "Quiltmaker". I know that some folks here are using that system.

If you are using that system, how well is it working for you?

Bev - the best I can tell - the latest is issue #124. I wandered over to

and don't see it mentioned. I'm still willing to believe there could be a system for scraps even though my scrap bin is madly out of control. (It is also a thing of beauty and a joy forever.) Does Bonnie have some great ideas? Polly

I use part of her scrap system. I save 1 1/2", 2" and 2 1/2" strips, 2" and

3 1/2" squares. I used to have a huge scrap bin, but I have gradually eliminated it over the past 3 years. Every time I went to press something, I grabbed a few "scraps" and pressed them at the same time. Then when I went to the cutting table, after doing the cutting for my current project, I would deal with the few pieces that had been pressed. I have 2 plastic shoe storage boxes for light and dark 2" strips, and a large square box for 1 1/2" strips. 2" squares go into 2 bins beside my sewing machine (for starters and enders), and the 2 1/2" strips and 3 1/2 " squares reside in another large square box. Although I don't usually like to store fabric in plastic, my scraps are stored in "see-through" containers. They travel with me to Florida for the winter. Now that all my previous scraps are dealt with, I don't allow scraps to accumulate. Small pieces of fabric get cut and sorted right away! I think I have made at least 10 quilt tops using my "scraps", and the boxes never seem to get that empty! Bonnie's patterns help as well.

Quiltmaker also included directions for one of her quilts, "Tropical Twist", in that issue.

Lord have mercy! Did you see the extension cords and wires hanging out? It looks like something from a The Keystone Cops Meets Tarzan movie? I do hope she's got great insurance, strong bones and a skilled dentist. That's a disaster waiting to happen. What is she 'thinking' ? Polly

I was just looking over Bonnie's system for scrapping. I had not looked at it before. I manage my scraps in much the same way. I don't have the space for all the bins but I do cut, press and put away all those little pieces. I don't keep for quilting anyting less than

1", that is just my way... but anything larger is fair game. I just finished going through my stash and scrap baskets in the last month. Rgiht now everything it organized and amazingly pretty close to how Bonnie suggest they should be. I even sorted out a good (large) bag for my sister who is just starting to quilt. I told her that one of the fun things with scraps is that there may be that single smaller piece that is 'just right' for a block in your quilt. From what I see, Bonnie's system is easy to follow and right on the money. juliasb

WOW! I think I might have just found a setting for one of my Dear Jane quilts! Dear Jane at sea!
