Rag quilt? your opinion

A while back, someone here told us about a rag quilt she had made. It seems that it was the family favorite for snuggling in while watching a movie. She said it had been around for years and had survived many reruns of the Spider that Ate Japan. However . . . she also said that it shed constantly; artfully draping the snug-ees, sofa, carpet, washer filter and QIs with never-ending ravels. Have you made a rag quilt? Was it well behaved? Any suggestions? Polly

Well. This is very interesting. Either: nobody has made a rag quilt, or Nobody wants to talk about it. Or - everybody is out roping goats for the Labor Day dinner. Polly

Missed the original question.

Have made two. The shedding tapers off quite a bit after the first couple of washes, but doesn't end (so far). That said, I don't so much see threads on people as a few more threads whenever it's washed---they don't seem to ever get quite well-behaved enough to wash in the same load with a passel of other things.

IMO, worth it. YMMV :)

Actually, Tania, I asked the question for you. We were at a quilt show in Pensacola and I put my hand on a rag quilt that felt so very, incredibly wonderful. Ah. Yes. Asked about it here on rctq then and heard such messy experiences on the Life and Times of living with a rag quilt. I was just wondering if there was an 'Aha' in stitching one that would make it as good to live with as to touch. Polly

if one milks those goats you could make some nice goats cheese to serve when you invite your quilty friends over for lunch. j. OK, you got me. I'd rather rope goats than make a rag quilt!

Roberta: I agree. I'll help rope those goats, and make the cheese that Jeanne suggests! Pat in Virginia

I milked a real one! many years ago. It was one of my treasured experiences - resting my head in the warm, soft hollow of her flank. I can still remember the feeling. I have also half-sheared a sheep and learned carriage driving!! Not a competition I know, but I am usually so strait-laced that I thought you might like to imagine another side to me >g< .
