RCTQ Meetup Lizzy comes to call

Now that all my gardening starts are started, the berry bushes are planted (and six inches of snow have fallen on them), and I am getting a break from kiri's houseproud frenzy (not only did Lizzy come to call but kiri's mum is due sometime today) I can breathe for a moment and write The Official Report of Lizzy's Visit.

Lizzy and her DH had to come over from the UK for buisness nearby in PA. Since they had a couple of days between finishing and leaving, they drove up to say hello.

Ash took center stage for much of the visit. He seemed to feel that Lizzy and her DH Steve were in need of many hugs. He also made sure that Lizzy didn't carry off his quilt after she saw it, by taking it away back to his bed before she got more than a brief glance at it.

We had a nice chat over a cup of tea, rather strong tea since I asked DD3 to put the kettle on for me and she only filled it halfway, and then took Steve out to the hardware store to look at woodworking stuff. Poor Lizzy is on a fabric diet, so we bypassed the LQS. Then we went out to lunch, where we discovered that a western NY fish fry is pretty much the same as fish and chips. Back home for some more chat, wherein they discovered that some local laws are quite barbaric (no composting within city limits, I can buy a gun but not a crossbow, etc.), and Ash took the opportunity to investigate Steve's facial hair. By that time they had to start back to catch their plane.

All in all a fun visit. Lizzy is a bit on the quiet side, and Steve obviously has a keen fashion sense (he and I looked rather like the Bobbsey Twins, though of course I have Nice Boots).

Now if we can get Lizzy to be a bit less quiet _here_.

By the by, if you cannot buy the cartridges at the hardware store how do you run nail guns in the UK? I saw Lizzy and her DH be a bit surprised that you can just buy Remington cartridges off a hook next to the staples, but it didn't connect in my head until later. Do they even have nail guns over there?

Nail guns here seem to be mainly electric or cordless, and seem to be more for professionals - the largest DIY stores don't seem to carry them as standard stock. Are the cartridges those used in ordinary guns or something different?

Perhaps nail guns are more strictly controlled here, especially if the cartridges are gun ones. Remember we have very strict gun controls here

- basically the only people who have them are farmers for shooting vermin and sportsmen for shooting targets and game birds. They have to have a licence and the guns have to be kept in a special locked cupboard checked by police. Therefore cartridges are only available from specialist gun shops. Of course criminals always have ways round these things.
