Re: Blue Birds

Further piccie of the Bluebirds little quilt. All the leaves are appliqued now, and am just doing the row of flowers above the bottom bird. They are fawny coloured with a sheen on them.

I've constructed the birds, but they are only laid on the main fabric and the top bird's beak isn't done yet (just a spike of fabric put in the right place). Think I need a bit of something in the bird colour in the centre of the quilt - embellishment of some kind on the broken heart?

...I've just had another hard look and think the purple of the heart is too strong and your eye goes there rather than the birds. I think I am going to replace it altogether with the darker of the bird blues. DH said he thought that a couple of weeks ago - why didn't he say something then!

The binding will be the same as the inner frame - sort of batik - dark purpley blue a bit like shot silk.

At the moment the main quilting will be some leaves in the two empty corners, a spider's web next to the singing bird, and everything appliqued will be outlined in the 'ditch'. Then the leaves will get veins, etc.

Still can't decided whether to hand or machine quilt. I can machine quilt using press n'seal ok which would be the borders, but think it would be easier to do the applique ditches by hand. Thinks......?

It's just gorgeous, Sally!

I think that would really make the heart look wonderful.

Hmmm ... I think you're right. The purple is pretty, but it does rather stand out from the blues.

I think you should do it in whatever manner will work best for you. You could do part by hand and part by machine, after all. :) Good luck -- it's looking terrific!

oh Sally, leaves are my absolute favourite thing in nature. the variety in both shape and colour always fascinates me. so naturally i love your design on this quilt. clever watercolour of the leaves from light to dark blue as well. i cant wait to see how this turns out. :) is this your own design? either way it is a lovely one. hmmmmm, i've got a bird i made somewhere that hasnt got a home yet, maybe i should come up with a similar design. come to think of it, i've got a mess of green leaves all ready to add to something as well. hmmmm. i'll ponder that for a while tho i think. thanks for that. :) keep us posted on progress. cheers, j.

The title we were given was 'Singing the Blues' hence the lady bird flying away, the broken heart and the singing bird - and of course, the blue.

I learned to Quickstep to the song in about 1957 and can still remember the words. We had a dancing teacher from the town to teach we Convent girls. The Pianist was an elderly nun crouched over the piano. Something I will never forget!

I was, and still am, binding in the same purple, but still find my eye going to the heart and not even seeing the birds.

Perhaps you could outline the birds wings, etc with a darker blue embroidery floss? that way you could keep the broken heart in purple. that might balance the 2.
