round robin nearly done

I got the top for the last round of borders this week. This has been so fun. It's a real challenge to look at someone else's quilt and try to figure out what will make it sing. As it turned out, all the other women are "traditional" folk. Their medallions are classic patchwork patterns out of small scale low-contrast prints.

This is a far cry from anything I do, so it's a real stretch. I was in the end happy with both my 1st and 2nd borders. This one is tougher. The color scheme is locked in; I couldn't seem to shift it away from the dominant blue with any success. My best idea just didn't look good on the quilt, so I've gone with a far plainer concept.

I've been resisting posting any pictures, so that in case any of them are on the net they won't accidentally "peek". We'll receive back our tops at the Jan meeting, so hopefully I'll get a shot of all 4 then.

I want to start another one right away; it's just so interesting to open up a complete surprise each month.

I've done only one RR, and I agree - it was a lot of fun. One of these days I might even get it quilted! I'll be waiting for the pics in January. I always look forward to seeing how creative people have gotten on these types of projects.

I just can't bring myself to join in on this at my guild. I would be so afraid of ruining someone else's vision that the stress would far outweighs the enjoyment.

I have also seen people deliberately sabotage a perfectly nice start. They thought they were being funny.

Hey, I just thought of something. Maybe this says more about the people in my Guild than anything else!

Deliberate sabotage? I can't imagine that in our guild. Plenty of the stress you mentioned in the first paragraph, though.

On the first border, I intended to tuck all my extra fabric in for the next person (we had set a "fat quarter minimum" for included fabric), but I made so many cutting and sewing mistakes there was nothing left.

sabotage? really. maybe there were just some folks with little imagination and just couldnt see what direction the next round should go?? maybe your Pres could have a few words of wisdom re this issue when the next RR begins. i'd bring that up with whoever organizes your RRs or the president of your guild.. explain your concerns. for those with little imagination, they can ask friends, colleagues, relatives, other guild members for their thots on what they're working on.

i cant imagine why on earth someone would sabotage but ya never know i guess. yup, i'd bring this issue up with someone. then you could have some fun too. sounds like you're interested but a bit skeerd (sic) of the whole thing. j.

Maybe sabotage was the wrong word. This woman had done a very nice embroidered block and bordered it with soft colors. It looked old and well used and nice. The next person had added a pieced border using the same kinds of fabric. The blocks were small star blocks and it was really gorgeous. The third person added a piping and a narrow border that really set off the earlier rounds.

The fourth person used purple and black Halloween fabric. Just plain borders but really wide. This person is considered our "art quilt" guru. I heard her say that the original quilt just needed shaken up a bit. (Hell, maybe I heard her wrong and she actually said the original quiltER!)

The original quilter was a good sport about it when she took it out of the bag the night she got it back. I almost cried and I know the other people who worked on her top were upset.

I heard the original quilter had quite a time ripping out the stitches on the Halloween border.

Anyway, I was new and it just kind of soured me on the process. I can't believe I ever went back. That should tell you how enthusiastic I was about quilting.

Susan,

I was in two round robins like you describe. It IS a lot of fun and challenging. I hope you can get the pics of the 4 quilts. I'd love to see them. :-)

Yikes! I've got a lot of respect for arty types who can think outside of the box, but they don't always play with well others. Instead of going with the theme of the quilt that was already set, she just felt compelled to do her own thing. She probably runs with scissors too. ;-)

I've done three round robins and quite a few block swaps via the internet--only one of the round robins went bad. Two of the people disappeared and some of the tops along with them. I don't know if they deliberately dropped out in order to keep the tops that had come their way, or if something dire happened to them. One of them was having health problems...., so I won't say for sure that they were dishonest.

In any case, it didn't keep from joining more swaps. :-)

Cindy, you are an excellent quilter. Any round robin would be blessed to have you as a member. :-)

uh oh, Cindy that is really sad indeed. i cant for the life of me understand why anyone would do such an awful thing to what sounds like it was turning into a lovely quilt to receive back with all those other additions from truely thoughtful caring quilters in the guild. i am glad she ripped out the purple halloween crap added. ewwwwwwww. i now understand why you're soured on it. i'm sure that dispicable person is a one off and she wont ever again be included in any RRs going. if she is, at least you can come up with some excuse (if you must) to get out of the deal but if t'were me, i'd just tell her flat out what i thought of her total lack of consideration on that RR and refuse to join an RR with her in it because of that last one. sorry, i guess i'm just a meany but honestly she needs a bit of a clip round side of her head by someone. why not just find out who is going to be in the RRs and go from there. j.

Why thank you, Michelle! It would still stress me out to do it with Guild members. And I've got to admit, I participated in 2 Row Robins with other members of this group. I really enjoyed it. One went fine, but the other one. Oh my. She disappeared in 2005 and I still search the internet for that woman. I was one of 2 people in our group of 5? 6? that got our tops back. I've held onto the thief's top, holding it hostage so to speak. But not a word. Poor Jessamy was the coordinator of that little episode and I don't think she's been the same since. Jess and others called her and sent prepaid envelopes and she kept saying she was going to get around to it, but did nothing. That soured me for a long time.

But actually, I'm kind of ready to do it again. You guys have re-energized me.

just have to be waaaaay more careful who joins in and how it is run i guess. that really sucks when someone vanishes and takes your top with her. how hard is it to mail it back. i hope if you do another one it all goes smoothly and quickly. j.

I did one RR many years ago with FRIENDS that met weekly. We helped each other out without letting the original owner in on her quilt's surprises. I would have liked a size restriction as they got pretty large and I usually do smaller things. It took me a year to hand quilt it. Our only "rule" was that the fourth round was to have applique in it. They all turned out great.

I can see why that experience would put you off row robins for awhile. In your case, you KNEW the woman had just flaked out.

I'm feeling energized about block swaps and row/round robins too since this conversation--but I can't let myself do it now. I've got two tops to machine quilt AND a baby quilt to do.

Best regards, Michelle in Nevada
