Rulers for quilting

I have been asked to do a presentation at our April guild meeting on 'quilting rulers' -- and I was just wondering if there are any places online that would have some information and examples. (I don't want to re-invent the wheel....) Have you ever done this? I need to do a handout with it, I think.

You might go to the QNM website and see if they've reviewed rulers in the past couple of years. Now and then, they compare various products and list their likes and dislikes. As often as not, I don't agree with their findings but appreciate their efforts anyway. Other things that may be interesting for your report could include the care and feeding of rulers; how to clean them, whether to clean them, what to use to make them not so slippery and how to mark them. I like to have a tiny circle to mark the dead center spot on my ruler squares for fussy-cutting without guessing. To get their attention (a very important part of any presentation), you could demonstrate that the dollar bill is really close for measuring 6". You never know when you'll need to check out a fabric's print size with no ruler at hand. Handing out dollar bills would be an effective attention-getter but you may want to pass on that idea. Polly

I always open my beginner class of quilting with a mini lecture on rulers, my pet peeves are those odd colored rulers that don't show up on some fabrics. The other point I like to make is the value of a 6 x

24 ruler....many beginners find it so awkward and opt for the shorter, cheaper, 6 x 12 but when I demonstrate the value of spanning the full 22" folded width of fabric right off the bolt...they get the idea. I do like the 6 x 12 for other second cuts. The other absolute must have is a 6 1/2" square. Nancu Srebro-Johnson has several great books out on how to get the most from your rotary cutter and ruler, excellent resource also. (the first book probably out of print now, has terrible color photos, but the newer one has better photos). As mentioned at my guild last night during a demo of squaring up blocks, "you can never have enough rulers".....As far as online I am sure a google search will give you losts of info...

Does this include all the speciality rulers - triangles, curves, etc. The individual makers seem to have websites - or you may be able to borrow some to demonstrate.

Most seem to be a complete mystery to me.

Oh, don't forget the 'add a quarter' ruler - invaluable for paper piecing.

Yes, you do need to be concerned with copyright.

If the information she is passing out is not her original work then she needs to get permission from her sources - books, manufacturer websites, quilting sites or wherever. As long as she has permission to copy and distribute than that is fine

for her

If someone at guild then wants to make subsequent copies to pass out they need permission to do so as well. Likely her sources will have given permission for her to pass things out at that one event. It probably won't extend to members and others passing things around as well or even for her at future events.

Why not ask her first. Maybe she was told she could pass it out to anyone who was interested at any time. Maybe not. Worth asking though.
