Scrappy Guild night..... we need ideas.

We are having a scrappy themed program in February and we need some ideas for activities, demonstrations, etc.

We have come up with some possibilities but we are kinda stuck on this one. Doing a charm square swap and or a strip swap, and or a scrappy block swap. We are hesitant on doing some kind of demonstration, 4 corners kind of thing because we find that when there is no speaker and demonstrations are done that most people leave after the business part of the session. But ideas for demonstrations are certainly welcome.

Any ideas from all of you oh wise ones? Has your guild done a night like this? What did you do and what did people like or dislike?

If you have members who have some examples of scrappy quilts, or even tops, you could do a modified "bed turning" type of program. This involves having a "bed" (a couple of tables together would probably work), layering quilts/tops in reverse order on the bed. Be sure to have info about the quilt-- technique, who made it, etc.-- written out and in the correct order. Cover with a sheet, for the duration of the business meeting. For the program a "presenter" would read/tell about the quilt as a pair or 2 of "show-ers" hold up the quilts in order. Then transfer them to a second set of tables while the next quilt is presented. Could be the entire program, or not depending on the number of quilts you can come up with.

For mini demos... how about a "speed dating" type of format, but as small groups. Different tips/techniques dealing with using scraps. Perhaps a short handout about them. Divide people into groups, each group spends X amount of time at a station, bell rings or something to move to the next station and draw a door prize at the same time. Have to be present to win a prize. (See if any of the local quilt shops will donate something even so the prizes are a bit "more" than "usual" with your group.) Perhaps having some sort of quick, fun "quiz" based on the demos, with a good prize or two would also work to keep everyone's interest in the program. (You could even ask the ones who tend to leave early if they could do the short demos.... )

Good luck, have fun,

How about something on setting ideas for scrappy blocks, there are some excellent books out there. There is one by Margaret Miller, though I think it's perhaps it's a bit too advanced as it's very design focused, but it would be a good read for whoever is presenting - she doesn't cover basic setting at all, for which I recommend Sharyn Craig's book on setting, as she sticks pretty much within straight, on point, sashing, etc. but does amazing things with them, often to the extent it's hard to tell where the sashing ends and the blocks start, or even realise it's a set of scrappy blocks.

I've also seen a really great design for scrappy nine patches recently, it's based on the trip around the world colour layout. It uses about 5 different values of one colour then you alternate a round of colour with a round of nine patches, I think with dark in the center. I've seen it done with a couple of different colours and it's looked great both times, the scrappy nine patches both people have used came from a group swap.

You could also talk about the scrap users system (the web link has been posted here before), maybe ask around and see if anyone uses it and interview them. Her site also has lots of photos of scrap quilts, so it might inspire you!

You could have a scrap exchange, ask people to fill a ziploc with strips of a minimum length and width of a single colour and then swap (I'm thinking log cabin here, I've been working on one myself and would love to exchance scraps of colours I'm not using with ones that I am!).

Cheers Anne

Thanks for all the great suggestions! If anyone has anything else to add, even if it seems simple or stupid, please add it! We can use all the help we can get!

I'll pass all of the suggestions so far on to our program coordinators :)
