seam on backing

Do you think a seamed back should be centered? I have to seam together two widths of Minkee to make it big enough for the backing. This will then be a lot bigger than I need. I could put the seam down the middle and trim on both sides, giving me two pieces left over. Or I could put all the excess on one side with the seam way off center, which would give me one nice sized piece left over. Any preferences? This has already been a pain in the patoot to work with. It's a lot of fabric, heavy and wiggly.

My opinion- for what it's worth- is that the Minkee seam will hardly show if the nap runs in the same direction on both pieces. Add some quilting or tying and it should disappear even more. I would put the seam where it's most convenient with the least waste.

Good luck! ;-)

They do longarm quilting at my LQS. They will not even attempt to do one with a Minkee backing, because it does move around too much.

I agree with Leslie regarding the seam. Bev in TX

Well, I did put the seam off center and it will be fine. I can't guarantee that it's perfectly even all the way around, but as I folded it, it was pretty close. It should be just fine when quilted. I'm just glad to be done. I had to crawl around on the floor to trim it and my knees don't like that at ALL! My longarmers like to work on Minkee, so I don't have to worry about that potential problem.

Pay attention to Leslie. I've stitched Minkee for miles and there's just NOTHING that is soothing to a little one (or a big one). The seam won't show - so do cut so you can have a nice size piece for something else. Get the vacuum out before you cut. Polly

Strange, but this Minkee was very neat and clean! Amazingly, I had very little lint/shedding. I have everything all packed up to deliver to the long arm quilter on Monday. And tomorrow I get to deliver a quilt I was asked to make last Fall! I'm slow, but thorough. I can't post any pictures until the gift is given. I'm slowly working through my "to do" list. Very slowly!!! I have a baby quilt layered to quilt and another one in the applique process and yet another one on the design wall. Not sure if they are all for the same baby due in August. I probably should save one or two!

Thanks so much for that bit of information. You are so lucky :-). I mistakenly thougt that if one would not allow it, then none would do so. DH would like a quilt with Minkee backing. Perhaps I should look around to see what other longarm quilters in the area are willing to do.

Actually one of my longarmers loves to quilt on Minkee! She likes to make Minkee on Minkee quilts. The other doesn't mind either. So ask around.

If your DH would like a quilt with Minkee backing, you are in for a treat. I was shopping for real Minkee a while back and was so pleased with the new and wonderful colors and prints. I was specially charmed with Minkee's 'cow' and also a solid blue that will just knock your socks off. Polly

After I thought about it Susan, that's what I came up with too. I thought it would be hard to get it perfectly centered and it would be evident when folded. I would say the seam is about 1/3 to 1/4 off center and not lined up with a block seam either. And I have a pretty decent remnant of Minkee left over. Thanks. K
