shipping SM and Pfaff opinions

Hi, My mom has just told me she's giving me her SM -- bought probably 3 years ago if that. It's a Pfaff with all the bells and whistles including a computer hook-in type of embroidery set up. I used it while I was in Arizona recently and was quite frustrated with it....but didn't have access to the instruction manual (which has been lost) or any instructions. My mom apparently has never figured out how to set the tension, etc. Anyway, the question is: is it possible to safely ship this type of computerized SM? If so, who would know how to pack it and what's the best way to go about the process? Also, if any of you have one of the computerized recent model Pfaff machines with embroidery program, is it a good machine? Should I keep it or use it for trade-in on a quilting SM -- a Juki or Janome 6600 or that Brother that is a quilter?

plan a: does she have the original shipping carton? I have so little storage space it is a real challenge to store empty boxes but you can bet i have the h-viking boxes with priority and on top so they won't get wet for a hurricane.

plan b: go to a pfaff dealer and try to get an original box.

plan c: go visit her again and put it in your carry-on?

Sunny:

- Shipping. IMO, the best way to ship any SM is in its original packing box. The styrofoam is made for that particular SM. I would take the SM, in its case, plus the original packing materials to a reputable shipping company. (Mail Boxes Etc, or UPS come to mind NAYY.) Pay to have the company do the packing and shipping.

- Pfaff. I love my Pfilomina Pfaff 7570. NAYY, but I've had her for about 8 years, and she is a sweet heart. I did NOT buy the Embroidery Unit for the SM, but like the SM features. You can get Instruction manual from Pfaff, see this site:

- Keep it or Trade. Give it a try for several months before you decide. Be sure to ask your local Pfaff Dealer for New Owner Classes.

Good luck, PAT & Pfilom> Hi,

Yes, DO remember that, packed in the original packing, the machine and box are for pallet/bulk shipping, not for parcel post or individual shipping. It'll need to be further protected by another layer of styrofoam and an outer crate. Wrap any small items in bubble wrap and pack them in carefully. Take the needle out of the machine and put the presser foot down on some folded cloth before packing.

. Anyway, the question is: is it possible to safely

Hi. My machine wasn't quite this fancy but I successfully shipped a Viking Lily by UPS. I did not have any of the original packing; I just hauled it down to the UPS store and paid them to pack, ship, and insure. They wrapped it in a lot of bubble wrap then packing peanuts and something to keep it centered in the box. It was a good experience.

NAYY.

I do everything except general mail through UPS. I have a very nice UPS store near me, and they have packed computers, extremely fragile items for me for years with no mishaps. I only use the regular mail service for cards or anything like that. I never ship packages using my local postal service.
