Shoes for a Caterpillar?

If you are ever, ever going to make a crib quilt, you need to see The Very Hungry Caterpillar at

. My quilts for the preemies are much smaller than Andover's, of course, so I only made the caterpillar but this is a pattern I think everyone will enjoy. The only decision I had was deciding how many shoes a caterpillar wears, what colors and whether they would be in pairs. Pat on Her Hill tossed in the problem of how old the caterpillar might be and whether he would be wearing baby shoes or old folks' slippers. The butterfly is mighty pretty but can't compete with silly-faced caterpillar. Go look at him when you have a minute. Polly

Found it in the "What's New" section......how DARLING! I see little black tap shoes with tiny gro-grain ribbon bows, bit of silver satin stitch on heels and toes and embroider some lovely eyelashes on the critter........but then I was the kid who glued sequins and feathers on my stripped down story book dolls to make them all look like a Vegas show girl chorus line. Or maybe yellow rain boots with umbrella and cloud prints in the quilt. This caterpillar would just be too, TOO cute with all kinds of "theme" ideas.

Remember reading this as a bed-time story - must have been a long time ago as children are now 37 and 33, so perhaps the old folks' slippers might be in order - very old for a caterpillar!

Every page had a bit cut out where the caterpillar had nibbled!

Gold cotton lame' shoes, of course! Need a bit of it??? How many shoes it will need depends on how many legs/feet you put on it. (duckin' & runnin'!!!)

its one of my all time favourite childrens books. my kids all loved it. as it is such an old book, would it look ridiculous to use to put a range of shoes from babys at one end, thru kids school shoes, tennis shoes, high heels, a few others that i'm at a loss to think of right now, thru to the old ladies slippers at the end. just covering the lifetime of shoes we wear. much like a caterpiller is but one of a short series of phases in his lifetime. might be too much tho. i'm just rambling off the top of my head again.

how about a rainbow of shoes, yellow, LIME, green, teal, blue, blue-violet, purple, red-violet, red, flame, orange, apricot, yellow....or something along that line. no idea how many shoes she/he needs tho.

or how about just a variety of shoe to cover some different people types in the world... athletes (tennis shoes), high heels, gumboots for the farmer and little kid puddlejumpers, lol, slippers, ballet shoes, hmmmmmm, i wonder if there is a way to do taps on the bottom of tap shoes in the Riverdance mode...all those feet just reminds me of them.

shrug, all i got today, j.

I wish you'd been here to help me choose; tap shoes and gold lamé would have been great. If I ever have another caterpillar attack, I'll give them a try. Polly

Where did you find the fabric? I love it. My daughter loved that book when she was little. I might have to make a Hungry Caterpillar quilt for her little girl.

I didn't actually hunt the fabric line, Julia. My preemie quilt is made from the scrap bin. I have this ridiculous but optimistic quest to reduce that bin, if only just a little. It never works. Polly

It would be lovely to include the book with the quilt.

Quite frankly, *I* do not think that particular caterpillar would be wearing shoes. I do think she'd be wearing socks! Polka doted socks, striped socks, color block socks, and even butterfly print socks. Yesterday I wore butterfly print socks when I worked as an Officer of Election at the Virginia Primary Election. So, yes, butterfly print socks. Maybe even some purple people eater socks. I have some of those too. PAT in VA/USA

Reducing the scrap bin by making preemie quilts! That's a funny one. Thanks for taking the time to take care of the wee ones and their worried parents. PAT

Butterfly socks? YOU found butterfly socks and didn't send me a pair?????????

I wear size 9 1/2 shoes. Mae sure the bottom of the socks do not have any butterflies on them. I'd hate to smoosh them all day long. (Truly tho, my feet are too sensitive to have any lumps/bumps from raised prints to walk on all day.)

Shoot, I'd even wear PINK socks if they had butterflies on them. Pink socks with Poiple Butterflies or Poiple socks with Pink Butterflies.....in ADULT sizes no less!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Butterfly (who would thunk it..Butterfly Socks, I'm grinning at the thought....no, I do NOT get out shopping very often)

There are many preemies who leave the hospital with nothing of their own except the disposable diaper they are wearing. I can't embrace them all but it is a great joy to hug as many as I can. Our own preemies will be turning twenty soon. They are such a wonderful blessing. Polly

Butterfly (Who just MIGHT go round wearing butterfly socks pretty soon)
