Smaller than a dime?

I was just putting big goofy eyes on tropical fish. Really. My manner of appliqué is seriously sturdy. I gather a circle of fabric around a dime, press it hard, ease the coin out and stitch the circle down. Firmly. This technique won't win any prizes but it will last through daily washing and abuse for a few years. Sometimes, the USA dime is really too big for the puppy, crab or other critter. Not a very subtle beg - but do any of you just happen to have any furrin coins smaller than a dime that you'd like to donate to my quilting for preemies? Polly

You need a half-dime! Do you remember ever seeing those? I think they went out of circulation probably long before we were born, but my dad had a few of them saved, I seem to remember they were just a bit smaller than a dime.

Hi Polly

I think the european 1 cent Euro piece is a bit smaller. Also the old Dutch 10 cent piece. I'll see what I can round up as far as the Dutch piece goes and send them to you.

What about buttons, Polly? I have dozens and dozens of small flat buttons. I'd gladly send you some. (You might not even have to take them out of the fabric?) . In message , Polly Esther writes

I have heard of people recommending various size washers to do this Taria so I second this idea. (plus I have no idea how big a dime is lol) Something else along the same line is cable ties can be used instead as a substitute for bias bars. I haven't tried it but it sounds like it should work.

Thank you kindly, Claudia, but the idea of using washers ought to solve the problem. DH has a supply of tiny parts out in his shop; bound to be something that will be just right. Polly

And thank you, Pat on the Green, (it's taking me a while to get used to your new i.d.). I have 3 generations of saved buttons here. Don't know what we're saving them for - but when the event comes, I am ready. I haven't had much success with buttons; not sure why. Maybe the metal in coins just heats up better... or something. You could not be Pat on the Green here today. Our nice weatherman just said 'warm and muddy'. Now that's a new one but is at least accurate. Polly

I use a product called Circleeze. You use it pretty much how you do it with the dimes, only you pull the gathered fabric through the cut out on the base plate. Make sure you've got it tight and smooth and iron the circle. After it cools, lift out the template and cut away the excess fabric.

There are about 4 - 6 different size templates and if none of those are exactly what I need, I substitute a Karen Buckley Perfect Circle template. Tons of sizes with those and they are heat resistant too.

You can see them here:

Howdy!

That's what I was thinking. Doggoneit, T, you're reading my mind again. Quick! What am I thinking now? Chocolate: YES!

Washers, go for the washers. Got a hardware store nearby? Always a fun trip... well, I think so! ..or rootle the tool box; there's always a variety of washers in the tool box's coffee can (and Dad's pockets).

R/Sandy- went to the tool store, Saturday, for a garden cart, my other b-day present; get what you like, like what you get!

Wikipedia says 17.91mm (much bigger than I thought).

British 5p is about the same.

British 1p 20mm.

I Euro cent, 1.65mm.

1 Belgian franc (1997), 17mm.

1 UK 1/2p (1982), 17.2mm.

I Romanian ban, 1.68mm.

1 Portuguese escudo 1.62mm (no date I can see, they don't use them any more)

So nothing much smaller until we get to...

Have you considered buttons or watch batteries?

I was thinking of batteries, too, but then wondered whether they might not explode or do something wierd in the heat.

Now I really am intrigued by the idea of watch batteries. Washers have a hole in the middle that would possibly make a shiny center circle when pressed. Would a battery explode? There's a good question. I wonder how far out in the back yard I need to go to test that? Polly

Cut out & put a small piece of stencil plastic or something similar on top of the washer when you cover with fabric. The when you iron, the plastic (or whatever you use) would keep the fabric from showing a different color "hole" in the center. Heck -- you might be able to find some sort of plastic that is heat resistant, sturdy enough to be used to make the eyes and easy to cut! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Well Donna, I don't know if I can or not. The heat resistant stuff I have here doesn't resist much. Could be, very well Could Be, that my iron is really hot. I have curled and curdled more than a few. Polly
