So, where do we go from WebShots?

It seems there are quite a few of us with a large, disorganized zip file fr= om WebShots (OMG- I had accidentally mis-typed the 'o' in WebShots as an 'i= '- rather appropriate right now??? ROFLOL) and we are needing a new *free= bie* place to show off the photos of our quilty projects.

Suggestions?

picasaweb.google.com

YMMV, but I'm happy. You can make albums public or viewable only by some people or totally private.

It is a google site, so if you are anti-google, it won't do.

I've not had any problems with it, using it for about two years.

Well, I am abandoning all the so-called free sharing sites. In a mad moment, I decided to construct my own website for photo-sharing. I can't do it without help; but I am getting that and definitely having a go. A bit extreme I know, but I was getting fed up by their changing systems all the time - not to mention the adverts: and I wasn't even with Webshots! Of course, my attempts might fail!

Good luck everyone with finding new homes. I was going to mention Picasa, but I see that Sally and Hanne have spoken favourably of their own experiences with it. . In message , Leslie & The Furbabies in MO. writes

Pat,

for years I only posted pics on my own webpage, but when I wanted to put more pics up more frequently, I just got tired of the updating. I never did spend any time on setting it up for a bunch of folders etc.

That's when I found Picasa :-)

Having your own site is good too. There are also photgraphers' sites where you buy space for many, many photos at an annual price - easier to handle and a little more certain than the free sites (but not as certain as your own domain). I think compared to buying hosting, those sites do compare pricewise, if you don't need a website for any other reason. (This is as much for everyone else, since you are setting up your own already).

Pat, I think you'll like doing it this way, once you're more used to how it works. I made that jump some years ago, and I'm very pleased. I can set up my site any way I like (though I haven't changed it in *years*), and I also blog occasionally to take care of the sort of chatty things that doesn't quite "mesh" with the way I have my own site set up. :) This way, my site has everything organized according to type, while my blog is -- of course -- organized by date.

Flickr is easy. If I can figure it out anyone can! You only get up to 200 pics free and then they charge. DS has one of the pay for accounts though and has thousands of photos for not much money there. (I can't remember the cost but if you want unlimited it was good) I so enjoy looking at everyone's work. Once you guys make the move maybe we can update the RCTQ page with the links? Taria

It's a simple matter to add text to your photos, Pat. :)

I think that would be a wonderful idea! :)

Wow, I haven't been to the newsgroup in a long time! Hanne referred me here from the Facebook page for the thread about Webshots disappearing.

I haven't even been to the webpage or thought about updating it in ages. I don't even remember who else I sent the password to!

I started switching over to flickr because I have so many other Yahoo "things." I used to upload EVERYthing to Webshots. Every little block I did. (Probably because I'm more of a block maker than a full-fledged quilter. And maybe because I was a beginner and so proud of every little block!) I came upon that 200 photo limitation at flickr, so I was glad for a reference to Picasa today. One thing I enjoyed about Webshots was being able to download professional and beautiful photos to use as desktop wallpaper. Looks like I could do that at Picasa too.

Glad to "see" y'all again.

Hey, Sandy! Long time no "see." I haven't been to your blog in a long time either. And also haven't been to my own blog! Your post here is going to serve as a nudge for me to get back to my blog. At least weekly -- I don't think I'd be a daily blogger. (In the future, feel free to remind me that I said this. LOL)

That disorganized file was a pain!! I tiled that folder and the Webshots site on my screen. Then I renamed all the photos in the file according to what I called them on Webshots. Then I uploaded them to flickr. Took a few hours.

I was more concerned about all t hose photos I downloaded into the Webhsots desktop application where I used the wallpaper and screensaver functions. Some years I actually paid for Webshots. when I was teaching it was great to be able to use some of those premium shots in my classroom and on the active board. Yesterday I discovered that all those files had been converted to JPG -- probably when I installed the SMILE app.

So I might try both Picasa and flickr for a while. The cool thing about Picasa is that it also has my blog graphics in a folder! (My Blog??!!?? Time to get back to that!)
