What's a good pattern for just starting quilting? Cindy Hutchison
Hi Cindy Go to

Rail Fence is quite simple and goes together quite quickly. Another would be a basic 9 Patch block... using like 3 inch squares (aka 3 1/2" with seam allowance) to make 9" blocks. Another one that can be a bit forgiving is the Log Cabin. What I like about the log cabin is that there are SO MANY variations in design... you can really be creative!
Google Images for Rail Fence Quilt or 9 Patch Quilt or Log Cabin Quilt to get pictures of them to see which appeals most to you.

I was going to suggest Rail Fence, too, since there are so few match points to consider.
That's also one of the reasons I like Log Cabin. The "inside" points just happen... and the only real points are bringing the blocks together - which you would have with any pattern!

what a wonderful site! Cindy
If you are new to quilting, I recommend starting with one of the Quilt in a Day books, such as Irish Chain or Log Cabin or Rail Fence. The patterns are easy and the Quilt in a Day books have a lot of good information on the whole process, including fabric selection, cutting, strip piecing, pressing, assembling the blocks, etc. "Quilter's Complete Guide" by Fons and Porter is a great reference book on quilting skills, too. The block collection in quilterscache.com is great, but it doesn't have a lot of detail on the basic basics.
