Summer "quilt" advice needed

I want to do about 3 layers of cotton for a summer quilt. I already have a duvet cover, which I have been using empty...........but it is just beige, and boring.

Should I just raw edge applique some stuff on it?

Better to start from scratch with a sheet?

Needs to be quick and dirty.......and machine washable.

Colors would be red, shades of sage green, beige,........like that Any creative ideas would be most welcome!!

TIA..........Pat in AR.

Pat,

If you want, say, a big image (a nice big flower, maybe?) on the top, I'd say go ahead and applique something right on there.

However, if you want to cover most or all of the cover, I'd suggest maybe cutting one side up and using the pieces as a foundation for foundation piecing (maybe string piecing with wide strings), and then layering with the back of the cover afterwards. If you like, you could use the "birthing" method for layering and quilting.

Of course, by cutting the cover up, you would lose some of the size of the cover (unless you supplement with other foundation also), so you should consider that before you start!

My thought would be to make a quilt top- something quick like Turning Twenty or Warm Wishes. Layer the finished top right sides together to the duvet cover, stitch around the whole thing leaving an opening and do a pillow turn, then stitch the opening closed. That will give you three layers, utilize the duvet cover and give you something pretty for on your bed. (I'd recommend stitching around the edge again about 1/2 in. from the edge to keep the edges nicely aligned and crisp.) Either suggested pattern for the top shouldn't take much more than a day to construct. Make the blocks really large if you want to make it go even quicker.
