Ten minutes to Sew

Remember that from Sewing with Nancy? Bologna. It takes me 10 minutes to clear a path and sit at the sewing machine. However . . . I have discovered that 6 1/2 + 6 1/2 does equal 12 1/2 eventually. I'm putting together bits and pieces for a truly scrappy quilt of everything in the bins. Assembling a 12 1/2" square somehow became a grind. OTOH a 6 1/2" square is izzy. ( That word from my beloved Puerto Rican friend.) This is too ridiculous to even share with you but I've found that while stealing a big chunk of time to sew is nearly impossible many days, time to make a little block ? not so hard. If all you can manage is to run a bobbin, put in a fine new needle and thread the sm, that's ten Very good minutes well spent. Polly

A few years ago I made a 10 minute quilt which ended up being twin size and yes, I only was allowed to 'sew' for 10 min. Actually set a timer. I did work my way up to 20 min and finally as long as it took Bolero to play on the cassette player. Never did get beyond that before I had to totally stop.

It can be done. Just do it.

Yes, I have just set my machine up again on the eating table. Since it is o= nly me, why shouldn't I keep it ready to go when I have the energy. Had to = laugh at myself, all my fabric and here is a torn old handtowel covering th= e machine when at rest. There are three projects requiring immediate action= [first- got the strips cut and sewing on a baby quilt to be done by this w= eekend] then I'd better do a proper cover! Ten minutes, or 15, or 30 a day = makes a difference in not only a project but your mental outlook.

Don't bother with making a sm cover unless you just want to. It would, however, be okay to use a respectable hand towel. My 'guest' sm and embroidery machine are protected ( a little) with just towels. Works okay and might look a little better. Polly

I have simple covers I made for my machines. Not quilted, just fabric that matches. It is dusty here in the desert and Lilly cat likes to get all tangled up in the threads if the machines are not covered. My problem could be that none of my hand towels are respectable though. lol

On the 10 minutes idea. Nancy taught me a lot about sewing. I think one of the best parts of the 10 minutes is that it keeps you moving forward and interested in a project.

Despite my best intentions I never seem to squeeze in that 10 minutes or 15 minutes or whatever in the evening. Maybe I should learn to get up earlier. I have handwork sitting out all the time but somehow never get around to it.

IME it's easy to develop a mental hurdle that keeps you from sewing those 10 minutes. You think to yourself that you'll just put away the clean dishes or start a load of laundry or any of hundreds of other things that need doing. and before you know it, your 10 minutes are gone. Or most likely, you don't even do any of those other useful tasks, but simply dither around fretting over all the things on your to-do list.

So focus! Tell yourself exactly what you plan to do before going to work the next morning. Make it realistic (allow enough time for your mission) and then follow through. Even if it's only one thing, having accomplished it will make you feel powerful. Roberta in D

Thank you Roberta, your post is very timely, and translates to not only sewing but anything [an excercise routine, writing, etc]

Just the prompt I needed today!
