Thanks, Sandy, for mentioning Miss Read

Thanks Sandy for mentioning Miss Read in another post. I have not read any of her books but she sounds wonderful. Our library has several of her books listed in the on-line catalog. Does it matter if the books are read in order? I see that there are several series. The Fairacre Series and the Thrush Green Series look the most interesting. "The Christmas Mouse" is a must for this season.

Howdy!

They're all good. ;-)

The Fairacre series was her first; she made up the village, w/ her experience as a school teacher. Thrush Green is quite a bit like the village she lived in when her daughter was small. There are several books for children, a couple of autobiographies, and a trio about Caxley families (including "The Market Square". The other books listed under "novels" are mostly related to the 2 major series.

The Christmas Mouse is my favorite of all the books; I read it every year ... at Christmas. It's set in Fairacre, tho' not much reference is made to the other villagers. There are 4 books that center on Christmas, 3 of them set in Fairacre. Miss Read (Mrs. Dora Saint) lives in Berkshire; she's in her 90s; she just published another book w/ her editor (Christmas at Thrush Green); I look forward to curling up w/ that next week. Hope you enjoy them, Susan. They don't need to be read in order; Miss Read is good at re-introducing the characters without boring us. It's a great line of stories, w/ some of the best character studies. No quilt bees are mentioned, but we quilters do love to read, don't we? ;-)

Cheers! R/Sandy
