the diamond saga continues

I have sewn together all my little diamonds into larger diamonds now. Each large diamond has nine little ones. They are shaded light to dark from end to end. Gorgeous! All the nine patch squares were already done, so I'm ready to put it on the design wall. Oh. No. All 32 large diamonds are sewn together incorrectly. Every. Single. One. They are supposed to be shaded light to dark from side to side, not top to bottom. It took me at least 8 weeks or more to get them done. For now I am just going to walk away. Sometime this week I will rootle around and see if there is enough fabric left to cut them again. I just can't bear the thought of taking them all apart and resewing them - without stretching, mind you.

But Karen: if you have done them, and love them, what does it matter if they are the wrong way round? Just have yours shading from top to bottom. Surely this will be OK? It has to be ... ... . In message , "Karen, Queen of Squishies" writes

Can you turn the diamonds the other way? Just a desperate attempt to salvage things. I'm so, so, sooooooooo sorry this happened when you've been working so hard and so diligently and with health problems thrown in, too. {{{{{Karen}}}}}

Patti and Leslie, I appreciate your heart-felt sympathy, and if I have enough fabric to cut them again, these blocks will be used in something else. However, they won't work for this quilt. You remember those Jinny Beyer quilts, they are all about the SHADING. So you see my dilemma...

Think of it as creating a new design, or just think "this is the way I wanted it" Gen

Karen I'm so sorry this happened! Could you perhaps redo the 9 patches to match the shading of your diamonds? Seems like 9 patches would be easier to rip and resew than all those diamonds.

Artistic license allows you to put your own spin on a design. Put them on your design wall, shaded light to dark end to end, in the layout the design says. Now, can you do your nine patches again, and make the design dance to your mucis?

Oh, Karen! I'm so sorry this happened to you! Is there nothing you can do to salvage what you already have?

Karen --

Oh my dear, I am so sorry. If I were closer, I would volunteer to help you unpick all those pesky diamonds. Can you not just be your usual creative self and have them shade from top to bottom?

Ok, walk away and try crocheting necklaces for awhile, lol.

Gentle hugs.

Love in Stitches,

Coleen (who has a new craft I could introduce you to -- it is canvas work -- at least I am doing a quilt design -- I am doing "Amish Trip Around The World", giggle)

It has happened to all of us at one time or in some way. Small consolation that is though. I hope you can do a workaround. The thought of trashing all that work is too much to think about.

Can't wait to see what you come up with - every time something like this happens - you are presented with an opportunity to be creative! Walk away from the discouragement and see what's presenting itself.

I won't trash them, they are too beautiful. But I don't think I can use them in this particular quilt. Here is a link, only mine is four stars linked together for 73" square. I just don't see a way to use them, you can see how they are shaded side to side and not end to end.

Looking at that picture only *half* the diamonds shade side to side (the ones with deep blue in them), whereas those with the greeny-blue shade end to end. Maybe you only need to remake half of your diamonds?

If they are all done with the shading the same way, why not just go with it as is?

I'd try re-shading the nine patches. You might find that it works and makes a more interesting design.

I think if you turn the setting squares 1/4 turn counterclockwise they will shade end to end also. Try it- you don't really have anything to lose and it might be really stunning. It will be different from other quilts made with the pattern.

Maybe.....

Karen, if it's gorgeous, why not let it be? Do NOT take them apart. First, they will stretch and you'll have a miserable time putting them back together (at least I would). Second, how awful to undo good work. It's downright depressing. Just take a few days, and then look at them again -- just as they are -- and see if it won't do. Change the design and make it yours. Rewrite the pattern. Change the ending of the story. Or send them to me.

Karen, having looked at this link, I honestly think there is a way that you can use what you have done without any changes at all, except direction. I'll have to do some drawing from the link and then play around with what you have. I presume the setting squares and nine patches are as the link? And have you shaded all your diamonds, or just the blue ones?

I'll work on it in the next hour or so, and get back to you. Don't get your stitch ripper out, though >g< . In message , "Karen, Queen of Squishies" writes
