Thread supply woes!

For years I have used only Coats&Clark dual duty 100/60 for piecing my quilts which I had sourced in a 6000yd cone from Atlanta Thread&Supply....I was hoping to stock up again but found that the company has been taken over by Wawak Sewing Supplies. The thread isn't shown in their new catalogue so I emailed for info - they have been helpful in giving me the new stock number for my favourite thread ...... the price has doubled! and there are less than half the number of colours available. I know that everyone has their own personal favourite sewing thread but I do not like 50wt/40wt threads ..... I have tried them all .... I am considering an order with Wawak to try some of their other available threads and maybe one of the exhorbitantly priced cones of my dual duty (for old time's sake)....back to Gutermann and/or other polyester threads? I've left a message on the Coats&Clark contact page - maybe it's an omen but they have street addresses in Greer and in Greenville, SC - my cousin lives in Greer and that is where my sister is heading next month for a short visit....I'm hopeful that my eye troubles will allow for a return to sewing/quilting - I'm still browsing for supplies. When looking at the Coats & Clark website, I see two different "dual duty" threads: XP and Plus, and none named only "dual duty". Which one are you looking for? Just in case one of us is able to find it... And what kind of price did you find already?

I searched their website too - I think that they have revamped the dual duty line of threads - there is now one that they label as 'fine' which seems to fit with the old 100/60 cone that I've been using. I have always bought the

6000yd cone of 100/60 for between $10 and $16 ..... Wawok wants $23.41 per cone.....some odd colours showed up on e-bay for $24. Barnyowl

Well. Bummer. I checked my own thread supply sources and only find exactly what you did. Maybe someone here has solution we don't know about. Polly

I think you've got a couple of factors at work. The old Dual Duty (now Dual Duty Plus) is a cotton wrapped corespun poly; the new Dual Duty XP is a poly wrapped poly corespun, as is the 'fine'.

Raw cotton prices have been historically high:

and have onlyrecently started to come down, so cotton purchased when the prices were nutso is now showing up as finished product. Petroleum prices are also high now (so there goes polyester) and energy and transportation prices are equally high. Hence you get $23/cone thread.

You might try looking for American Efird's D-core, about T24, assuming you want to use size

70 needles.

Consider also ordering a spool of this thread if poly does what you want:

-- you can see it here:

on muslin and here:

in the next tothe last photo -- the black thread in the needle is the Gutermann Mara 100 ontubes; the fluorescent green shaggy stuff in the bobbin is the serger thread Maxilock, and the light blue escaping from the doodads box in the back left is Gutermann poly -- the usual spools you find a Joann and the like.

I've been using Mara 100 for an all purpose thread for a couple of years now, and like it, though I sew more garments than quilts.

If you can't find the Dual Duty you like, you might consider trying Superior's So Fine polyester thread. It is a 50 wt., but it is a nice smooth, and yes, fine thread.
