Thanks for posting the photos and thanks for the lovely compliment. I will have to say that it would be difficult to make something that wasn't gorgeous when using those fabrics. VBS -- I love several of the fabrics but am really taken with the one with the Phoenix Bird I used for the lapel. That is all hand stitched in silk & gold & silver threads -- absolutely stunning. Best part is that the piece I bought was about 7" wide and about 3 yards long, from an uchikake which is a wedding garment worn over a formal kimono and is very, very long. Thank heavens I didn't have to cut through that lovely embroidery! The one piece was long enough that I got the embroidered section for the right lapel and then two additional plain pieces for the facing :-). You don't even want to know how many other pieces of kimono fabric I now have in my stash. I WILL make myself a large display quilt from all the ones that are heavily embroidered. Once I return home from the trip to the cabin, I will post and let everyone who is interested know that I will be sending my leftover silk scraps to whomever wants them. I have a nice bag full and they would be lovely for appliqué or crazy quilts, etc. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

B....U.....T.....ful!!!!!!!!!!!!!! amazing as well. now then, can you give some details on how you made this lovely garment? did you have a pattern or make you own? it has batting too? i'd love to make something like this by working out the pattern.

i once made my mom a dress with a mandarin collar and wide kimono sleeves all without a pattern. just figured out the dimensions and started sewing. that was in the days i had few dollars and less cents(sense). it fit beautifully and she loved it but didnt like wearing it for fear of ruining it. it was all well sewn and wouldnt have fallen apart but that was mom. made me wonder why i went to all the bother. my first and last 'all by myself' creation. go figure. maybe i'll do it again one day. heaven knows i've got a massive choice of fabrics to use. ah well. we'll see. j.

Hmm... Let's see now... What's the best way to bust Mary's chops over this one...

meh.

You folks know I'm kidding here. It takes some serious love to put that much thought, care, and... (ok, I'll be redundant here) LOVE into a project like that. In my best Daffy (Duck) voice, "It's Sthloppin' Over with Love!"

(Apologies for not being at my best this morning; just got up, and am fighting mondo-migraine)

BTW - I wear a 48 short (only not so many flowers ;^).

Bust my chops?? Over what? Why, the nerve of some people!!!! The jacket is quilted, it is made up of many fabrics that are totally different (except for they are all silk) in design and cut, all of the seams are embellished (even if it is all by machine)..... That makes it akin to a crazy quilt in my book. HMMMM, too bad they don't make kimono in velvet or satin or moiré LOLOL! And I'm very glad you wear a

48 short 8-P***** -- so does DH but he ain't getting a kimono suit either :-)))))))!!!!!!!!!! >^;;^< CiaoMeow.

I did have a pattern. It is for a polar fleece type jacket so is sized as outerwear which the kimono jacket it. More importantly, it had the shawl collar (OY, I'm pretty sure that's called a shawl collar but I forget now so might be mistaken). I used this to make another pattern with all the pieces. Which meant folding each pattern piece in half, pinning it to pattern tissue, adding seam allowances, etc. I ended up with six pattern pieces and have to remember to turn the pattern piece over when cutting out the different fabrics. So there is ONE pattern piece for both the left center front and the right center front, etc. That's how I ended up having to piece the (I think) right side front and the left center back pieces -- I forgot to turn the pattern pieces over when I cut out the first fabrics! OK -- next, each piece of fabric had to be ironed on to a very light weight stabilizer or there would be NO WAY to work with all those different weights of fabric -- especially silk!!! Each piece is then layered with a piece of silk dupioni and they are machine quilted together. There is NO batting -- the jacket is heavy enough as it is, especially when you consider the whole thing is lined! Once the quilting is done -- and that is a random design, sometimes echo quilting and sometimes some sort of free form or grid design -- I can begin construction. The right front is sewn to the right center, seams pressed and then embellished down both sides and the ribbon couched over the seam. One I have the "parts" together and have a left front, right front, whole back and two sleeves, I begin construction in the standard manner, sort of according to the original jacket pattern directions. There's a LOT of up & down to the sewing machine and my arthritis gets all mean and talks to me a lot so I only work for a few hours and then take a break. Other than that and working with silk, it's not technically difficult but sure looks great when finished :-)). If you are ever going to do something like this, e-mail me and I will help you with any tips I can think of. Most of the time, I don't remember the short cuts until I am in the midst of construction :-))). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

silk, how did i miss that vital bit of information. i was thinking more of using cottons, which i have a few of around here somewhere. i'd not even attempt silks with my track record. i sure admire you're amazing talent and determination to finish with silks. i know at the least little hiccup i'd give up on it. nope, i shall stick with my cottons. still gobsmacked, j.
