Two-Tone Binding?

I'm contemplating using two-tone binding on the salvage quilt, on which I am working. That is, I plan to have a blue/gray fabric show in the binding on the front of the quilt and a yellow fabric show on the back. I realize that the fabric strip for one side will be narrower than for the other side. I've made a few samples, but I'm wondering whether anyone have tips on doing this?

Thanks, Bev in TX

Thanks! That answered a couple of my questions.

I made three (3) samples, each one with the narrower strip 1/8" wider than the previous sample. My last attempt was at 1-7/8" wide, but it still seemed a tad too small. I was wondering whether to go with my last measurements (which was fairly good) or try another sample with it 1/8" wider. Those directions say to do that latter (1" wide).

I had also made two samples with the seam allowance pressed to one side and one with them pressed open. Although the "pressed open" sample was filled in a bit more evenly on both sides, I had wondered whether the "pressed to one side" version would wear better or not. This tutorial says to press them open.

Thanks again :-), Bev in TX

That's not something I'm likely to try, Bev. My stitching wobbles a bit and the 'wrong' side would just be bound to show here and there. That said, I find your adventure very interesting. Do report back with your tests and success. Polly

I also have a problem sewing consistent seems, but the beauty of the quilt on which I am currently working is that it won't matter :-). That is, it is a utility quilt -- made out of selvages and some fabric that is probably not of highest quality. Also, I'm keeping for myself. I do not really care whether the binding is not perfect or not. It's just a chance to try out something new :-).
