WalMart

Saw in the paper today Walmart is bringing back the fabric department, at least in some stores. They realize they made a mistake closing it and a few other depts. DUH

The closest WalMart to my house is almost 25 miles away. Their fabric/craft dept. is much, much smaller than it had been and I've been told it's being phased out. I have a ton of fabric stash, so the fabric itself isn?t the problem for me. It's when I need some rotary blades or a zipper or a spool of thread or a piece of Wonder Under- and I need it right now. I'm not sure how much further I?d have to travel if the 'local' WalMart closed their fabric dept. but if they enlarge the fabric dept. back to the size it was I?d sure be pleased.

Our nearby Walmart kept their fabric department even after they moved into their huge, new "super Walmart' building which is HUMUNGUS. I was so grateful that I wrote a nice letter to the store manager thanking them for not doing away with the fabric department after the big move.

I read today that Walmart is bringing back 1,000's of items that they had gotten rid of. Now that their sales have fallen off, they're bringing things back...I missed certain kinds of yogurt, frozen veggies, fat-free sour cream, asian and mexican items......and ours is a Super Store! I don't hold out much hope for them restoring the fabric department! I also read a while ago that they're getting out of the clothing business. I think they were trying to compete with Target, but weren't very successful.

The closest one to us gets worse by the minute. Today, the men's shoe department was carrying sizes 8 and 11. 'They said' they were getting more in. The only item in the 'fabric' department is sewing thread in 6 colors and very few spools of those. Mostly they're loaded with stacks of lidded plastic bins, aisle after aisle of shoddy furniture and a mile of big screen tvs. There must be trouble at the top. Polly

The article in our paper said that they also were bringing back the fishing dept. Never could figure out why they took that out either. There are lots of fishermen/women here. One of the WalMarts in our area never did remove the fabric dept. Of course, it's the furthest one from me!

Walmart has been under discussion in my area, the first one is 13 miles N. from me, the second is 16 miles S., the third is 10 miles E., the fourth is 17 miles W., and now the fifth is between first and third. Only the S. one kept the fabric dept. We, my guild mates and neighbors, are wondering WHY so many in such a small area? Wonder if the new one will have fabric? This area has been growing, commuters from the DC area, but with gas prices going through the ceiling they won't have any money to spend, even at Walmart! Bonnie, in Middletown, VA

Wouldn't surprise me at all if they behaved like Starbucks (allegedly, heard it from a marketing expert). When we wondered a few years ago why there were suddenly a gazillion Starbucks here in Munich, our expert said that the company deliberately opens stores in as many locations as possible. This is supposed to get people used to buying there and ideally to drive competitors away. Then, they allow all the unprofitable ones to go bust, on the theory that customers will then be willing to travel farther to the stores that remain.

They did close a small store when they built the first superstore, but these are all superstores. There was some talk of them closing the one store, but it is at the end of one of the main commuter highways.

Hope this indicates they will not close ours, threat keeps surfacing. My closest fabric store otherwise is Hobby Lobby about 35 miles from my house.
