Walmart-Fabric

By now no doubt everyone knows that Walmart stopped carrying fabric. But wait! Today I found out not _all_ Walmarts are created equal. I found myself in Walmart today and passed by fabric! Stunned, I stopped and asked a couple of the employees: "what was up with that? I was told that there was such an negative response that there are now 3 Walmarts in Idaho that will still carry fabric. The one in Boise on Fairview & Eagle, the original old Walmart in Nampa, and one in Mountain Home. The story was that the one that I was at in Boise alone had received over 32,000 negative emails and rescinded their decision.

FWIW.

My sister told me that in Illinois, the Super-Walmarts have discontinued fabric, but that the "regular" Walmarts have it. I hope this is the case!

The Walmarts in NH as far as I know still carry fabric. Manchester, Bedford, Epping, Nashua & Hooksett still do.

Our Super Walmart still carries fabric. When the whole topic came up I asked the sales lady there and she said the decision will be done on the basis of how much $$$ the fabric dept. makes. The fabric dept. in our Super Walmart does a LOT of business so the fabric will stay -- for now. Of course, the honchos can change their minds in a heartbeat so I'll keep making sure they know many locals would be VERY unhappy if they close the fabric dept. I'll buy quilt fabric there *IF* I need something specific -- usually a theme fabric (like kitties -- LOL) but I don't generally buy my quilt fabric there. I DO buy Walmart fabric for stuff I make for the SMDGD since expensive fabric is -- IMNSHO -- a waste of money for kids clothes that will only be worn a few months. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Our super-WM still has it. I don't see much ''new" fabric though. I wonder if they're keeping a few open to sell all that fabric from the ones that *did* close. An employee told me they decided to keep this one open because there really isn't another fabric shop in town, except for one very small LQS. I was glad they kept it. Sometimes I want to make a quick toss-around quilt, and don't want to spent $9 a yard. Hancock's is gone now, and Joanns is 40 miles away.

Terri,

Thanks for letting us know about the WalMart locations. WalMart is where I get a lot of our Project Linus fabric. I would love to be able to afford quilt shop fabric, but when you're making 100's of quilts, your just can't buy LQS fabric.

I think this may be whats happening. We had a regular Walmart with a fabric department close and a new 'super' Walmart without fabric open about a mile away from the closed store. Also there is a regular Walmart in the town over from us that still has fabric. But we may loose this one too at some point because I hear that Walmart wants to close that regular store and open up a new 'super' store just down the road! I think its ridiculous! Not a thing wrong with those smaller stores- in fact I prefer them. And to abandon a perfectly good building and leave it vacant for ages is lunacy. I cant understand why these smaller stores just cant be expanded. I hate to see so much open space be gobbled up by retail when there are so many vacant stores.

My pleasure Donna. The one at Fairview and Eagle has an enormous amount of fabric and 4 huge shelves of $1.00-$2.00/yard cottons at the monent, just in case you feel the need to go get some Project Linus fabric!

Well phooie! Don't have time to run in there this week. We're getting ready to head up to Sun Valley to the Jazz Jamboree next week. Have lots to do between now and then including drs. appointments, hair cut, vacuum 10 million flies out of the 5t wheel (why do flies go to RV's to die?)! Maybe they'll have some left when I get home.

Our Wal Mart still carries a small bit of fabric, just a few shelves. The woman who managed the fabric department for 12 years says she just about cries when she comes to work every day, but understands that the stores lose money on fabric departments. Bah. They make enough on everything else. Nobody can tell me that the Walton scions are hurting for dough. Seems like they could just throw us a little bone now and then. Wal Mart is where a lot of girls started sewing. They could afford the $2 yard and sometimes $1 fabric for "learners".

Oh never mind. If I get off on my corporate demons rant I'll be here all day.

It pays to add the store number when complaining to Walmart headquarters. Without 32000 people including the store number the company would have decided on having fabric at some other store at random, possibly in another state. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Oh, how I wish we had a Fabric Depot in Boise. The Mill End store in Boise has moved and is now a disaster - mostly carries foam rubber and upholstery type stuff and looks like a tornado had hit.

I guess it varies by store, because here in CT, the Super Wal-Mart here in my town still has the 'large' department of fabric that we have always had (and there was new stuff there this week that I noticed). When I talked to the manager about it, she told me that in this particular store, they will not be closing the fabric department until "4th quarter 2008"

Two weeks ago, I was in a SuperWalmart in Kissimmee, Florida, and there was no fabric/yarn department in the store. BUT there was a huge party section, which I was I had heard would be replacing the fabric/crafts. There was also a large scrap-book section.
