This always amazes me -- having both grocery items and clothing in the same basket! Geez, I'd hate to be the stockperson who had to put misc. merchandise (left behind (?)) by a shopper back where it belonged. Bra in with the bags of potatoes????? A leaky ham left over by the shoes/towels/????? Could be a real mess over a period of time. Just a thought. We're getting our regular store updated into a superstore here in town. (Town's making them change the outer appearance to something more New England-ish). I personally don't shop there much. Most folk I talk to don't either. Always amazes me that the parking lot is always full, though. ME-Judy who's wondering what will happen when Wally-world runs all the neat small stores out of business :-(

My DH edits a paper in a very upscale suburb -- so upscale we cannot afford to live there. A Wal-Mart has plans to build a store there, and is meeting fierce opposition. Letting all those poor people invade their neighborhood! Heaven forbid!

Have no fear, it wont and cant run them all out. Think of all the cool stuff Walmart doesnt carry.. those stores that can specialize in wonderful things will survive... new ones will emerge.... Internet stores are springing up all over and will help reestablish the availability of more diverse selection!. Walmart is a great example of Darwinism. This is a pet theory of mine. Lets see if it happens the way I suspect it will. :-) Diana

Not to mention the fact that small mom/pop stores are now lamenting that we can shop from home in our jammies. I know lots of shop owners who'd rather see me pick up stuff at WalMart than order online!
