What's your "A-HA" moment

I've been trying to sew pieced blocks to plain blocks and every once in a while the "size" don't match. The pieced block is just a about a

16th of an inch smaller. I know if I try to sew these together and all pieces are on straight of grain, I will end up with a tuck in the plain block.

By accident, really, I didn't feed to blocks onto the feed dogs, flat. I held the blocks up off the bed of the SM and be darned if the feed dogs didn't ease in the fullness of the plain block.

A-Ha a light bulb moment or maybe its a senior moment. (giggle)

I found if I place the bigger block on the bottom the met at the end. Granted this works only of they are off a small amount.

This is an old tailor's trick and I have used it for years when doing clothing construction or alterations. I almost always hold my fabric away from the bed of the machine -- from habit I suppose :-). Another hint is when two fabric pieces of the "same length" don't quite match, sew them together with the longer one on the bottom. The movement of the feed dogs will ease in the longer fabric, hopefully making the two pieces the same length again. When you sew two long pieces of anything together (especially stuff that is "supposed" to be the same length but never seems to match up), it's also helpful to hold the fabric pieces together about 6" away from the front of the sewing machine as opposed to holding it right as it feed through the needle. Then you sort of gently lift the fabric up and down as you feed it through the machine. When I do stuff like attach sashing to the long sides of a quilt I will do this. I usually pin periodically and then make sure I check the fabric frequently to make sure nothing had gotten kakalovich. It's surprising the things I do when I sew that I am not even aware of doing!!!
