will this design work

I have been thinking about what project I want to do next. I am not ready for anything complicated at this time. I do not have the braveness that some of you have had for your first quilt. What I am thinking of doing and have no idea if it would look stupid or not. If I could figure out how to make a half block in EQ5 I would try to design it but I am stupid when it comes to that program.

But here is what I am thinking about and wondering if this will work and if you all think so I will be starting to sew it tomorrow. I have some 6 inch squares, I have enough for a lap quilt and also material for the binding and a border, too. Anyway since I am not good at getting my squares to line up perfectly I am wondering if this would look stupid. Just sew the first row of 6 inch squares, ever so many columns across, just as they are already cut. Then on the second roll start out with a half square which would be 3 inches and then sew rest of that row until the last square with 6" squares then the end one sew the 3" square. Third roll do just like the first and fourth just like the second and so on. This way I don't have to worry about my points lining up just yet. Would this look stupid?

Can't wait for replies, I want something that I can show and what I have done I wouldn't even let my QI see because she would just die. BTW, I have never mentioned her before. She actually lives outside but she will make a good one I am sure. I am hoping that Dad will let me bring her in this winter, she is just a mutt but I love her to death. I already have a folder started to display my quilts in, but all that there right now is my puppy and she is only 4.5 months old in this picture and this is my sister, who happens to hate dogs holding her.

Now a littlehistory on Sugar, her mother is my nephew's dog, he was suppose totake her and get her fixed but she went into heat quicker than weexpected and so she ended up having 11 puppies the first time, thenhe, my nephew thought that his Papaw enjoyed the puppies so much thathe should let her have another liter, so he did and Sugar is a resultof that liter. The Mother is part cocker spaniel and the dad is afull blooded Jack Russell. I am 51 years old and have never owned myown dog before. I love this little thing with all my heart and neverthought I could be this close to an animal. Now my nephew has takenin two more stray puppies and as all his animals tend to do they willlive at my house or have so far. He does take them home but they justcome right back. Sugar's mother does the same thing; she even had bothliters of puppies at our house. Here are the stray puppies with my middle sister and my 84 year old father.

and hereis Girl, Sugar's mother, she is with my oldest sister and please don'tlook at the window sills they are nasty, I just happened to noticethat. The wire across that window is to keep the cat, that alsobelongs to nephew out of the window, don't have a picture of him rightnow, but he is 14 years old and his name is Ice-Cream.http://www.mountain-breeze.com/quilts/girl.jpg Sorry so long but I wanted to introduce you to my family, also.

Now you all have met my entire family.

Still can't wait to find out if that will work for quilt.

Yes, Jacqueline, that will be perfectly fine, and it will look very pretty. You will have fun deciding how to place the colours. Enjoy yourself. In various guises this is a recognised quilt pattern! So you just have a go.

When you have made one success, you might like to come back and collect up all kinds of tips for matching points and corners. It will be something you'll have to get to grips with - at some stage!! But, never fear, there are lots of ways to make it easy (as in 'honestly, easy') >g< . In message , Jacqueline writes

Thank you both, I think I want to learn to do the matching things once I cut my own fabric. Right now I am having a hard enough time just learning to sew again and I think this will be a good way to do it. I am excited to have gotten this far along and I think this other will move quickly but gotta be more careful with those seam allowances this time. Also need to figure out the size for it. I can't wait to get started but if I don't go to bed it will be late in the day before I do.

I think it will work fine, but remember that you'll actually have to cut your end blocks in the second row 3-1/4" wide to allow for the seam allowance.

It's too early in the morning for me to think about the quilt question, LOL! But I loved seeing the pictures of your family and your pets. Sugar is beautiful, and looks like she has a sweet disposition. By all means bring her in this winter. Even big dogs can be wonderful house pets. Just ask Leslie! I've had three or four really big dogs as house pets and they were just fine.

Good luck on your quilt, and give Sugar a pat from me.

Nope. We have a lady in guild who makes quilts like this. They look very nice and more interesting (I think) than row after row of lined up blocks.

Sugar got her pat from you and also a hug and an almost kiss, food, love, slap from the cat and a lot of things this morning. Remember this is my first dog in my life that is just mine and I am spoiling her rotten, or as rotten as you can with her outside. I have spent more time outside since acquiring her than I have since I was a child. Thanks everyone for the answers to my question.

a kind word of warning:

please , please teach her the basics! like that *you* are the Alpha and your wish is her command - you don't really want to be snapped at by your dog for no real reason than that she wants to be boss once she is grown up

I know it's hard with such a cute puppy but puppies have this nasty habit of growing up

Yes, it will work (and be lovely!), but remember that the end blocks that will finish at less than 3" wide. Your 6" blocks will finish at 5

1/2, and the partial blocks will be half that, or 2 3/4. Cut them with 1/4" seam allowance--they;ll be 3 1/4" wide, and as tall as the others. Clear as mud, right?

Jessamy,

Bless her heart she already knows the word NO, she sits on command and she fetches. She is selfish with my nephew's and sister's puppies, but hey they want to play with her toys. She will be fixed the end of next month, when she is six months old, I think she is very small and just the best dog on earth. Don't I sound like a kid. LOL She will learn very quickly if she gets to come inside that I am boss and that if she doesn't mind she will be punished. The cat is almost 15 years old has always been an outdoors cat, but he gets his shot was fixed and all when he was of age. Only thing is he is the boss, on the outside. But that is a pretty good life span for an outdoor cat. Sugar will probably not be allowed in the house as long as my father is a live and I won't buck him on it either, esp. since it is still his house. But she also knows her rules on the outside too. She will have a house with a heater in it if she remains outside, and she will be well fed and taken care of.

Yes except my blocks are precut I will just have to cut the end pieces, that's the reason I want to try this one and that will give me a little experience cutting then I can hit the big one. LOL don't know what that will be. Maybe something with that Magnolia print, won't be much though because I only ordered 5 yards of it altogether.

1 yard of the big design, 2 of small and 2 of leaves, I already have some solid green to go with it and could get some cream I guess.

Oh, Jacqueline, you sound like a seasoned quilter already! I, too, have purchased 2 or 3 yards of a main color and a yard of each of several fabrics to "go with" it--and have no idea what I am really going to do with the fabrics! I tend to pick coordinating blues and yellows, though I have never turned down a pretty piece of any color cotton, lol. Don't forget to check out yard sales or garage sales or estate sales (if they have them in your part of the world), as one can pick up some lovely fabrics cheaply at those places.

Hope you enjoy your quilting as much as I do. And I do hope Sugar will be allowed in the house eventually. Perhaps your father will change his mind after he gets to know her better--and after she grows up a bit and isn't so likely to chew on the wrong things or have an accident in the house. Puppies tend to do these things, bless their little hearts.

Jacqueline, This quilt design will not only work but be beautiful! Actually, I saw something similar in a magazine and it was called "Stacked Bricks". In the magazine they had used rectangles that were 3.5"x6.5.........but why not squares? I'm sure it will be lovely. I enjoyed "meeting" your family. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Elaine in IL

hi J, i agree with all said so far. it will be lovely. as to making joins meet up properly there is a wee trick to that, when you get round to trying it again that is. see if this makes sense to you. with two 2-patches to make into a 4 patch.... lay one on top of the other so the two seams face opposite directions and wiggle them so they nest, your fingers can feel this. then lay them on the bed of the sewing machine so the upper seam is laying away from you, the lower seam will b laying toward you, tho you cant see that lower seam. when you sew them the machine will push the upper seam point into the lower one matching them darn near perfect or exactly perfect after some experience with it. i hold the seams together after the wiggle bit as long as i can as it moves under the sewing machine and more often than not they match up great. i splained this maybe a bit better in a post last month tho i cant recall the convo subject it was in. oops. maybe someone else here will and you can check for it thru google groups that archives all the posts forever and then some. lol. i was thinking those bits you cut off the end half sqs would look good laid end to end or floated with wee strips of border fabric between them. of course i mean after you add a simple border to frame the sq strips. oh boy somedays i dont make much sense at all. there is a yahoo group of mostly, if not only, rctq'rs who use EQ.

Jeanne,

I am sure I have your post saved here on my computer. I noticed last night that I have over 800 posts saved. Now the question is, when I need it will I be able to find it.

Thanks for reposting and will lock this one also and probably copy over to word.

I haven't seen your magnolia print, but most RL magnolia blossoms around here have a touch of pink near the center, and the stamens have a dark gold color too. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I'm waaay behind in posts after having been away (and jetlagged), but this sounds a bit like a quilt I spotted in a quilter's webshots album once. I copied the style to make a blues-themed quilt for my father. It's the 8th photo in my quilts album:

was an easy design, so I actually finished it on time for once (forChristmas).
