Won quilt blocks

Last night was the Annual Christmas Party for my VRQ Bee. We had snacks and swapped 6" strips, then Show and Tell of the projects we've made from the Ugly Fat Quarters we received last year. I was amazed at the variety and workmanship of the projects. (Mine was a pair of large strip pieced pot holders.) We will do the same thing next year, swapping the Ugly FQ in January. I've got several candidates, but only need to contribute two FQ. (What was I thinking when I bought those?! LOL)

The high light was the distribution, by drawing, of the BOM for the past twelve months. We do this at the December meeting instead of having a monthly drawing. I won the October Blocks. These were scrappy blocks in the Cog Wheels Pattern. That one was in the Kansas City Star 'back in the day.' I won ten blocks, each 12" finished. I plan to offer these to my QOV Bee. We can make a few more and put together a nice quilt.

We had fun ... but then a group of quilters is always fun! Pat in Virginia

Only the FQs are "ugly"? I've watched the Ugly Dog Contest several times, and I know of a group that has an annual competition to see who can find the most tasteless (ugly?) salt & pepper shakers. Now it seems odd that I haven't (yet) heard of an Ugly Quilt Contest. I can't imagine that it hasn't occurred to anyone before...

Or have I just not been paying attention (well within the realm of possibility)?

I love a quote I read here once, but I can't remember who posted it -- "There is no such thing as ugly fabric. Just fabric that hasn't been cut into small enough pieces yet." It would be fun to see others' reactions to a fat quarter offered up as "ugly." You know there would be *someone* who loved it!

Of course, Sherry. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! (and all that crap...) 8^P One of my favorites is, "Beauty is only skin-deep... but ugly runs clear to the bone!"

Here's the link to Ami Simms Ugly Quilt Contest and if you also google 'Ugly Quilt Contest' - there are multiple hits for various other contests which are associated with lqs sites. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but sometimes, you have to just shake your head and moan! jennellh

Yes, only the FQs were 'ugly!' The projects were clever, creative and nicely finished. They included a couple WH, a tote for a hot iron, a ruler and cutter tote, even a basket of sorts. One overachiever made a fantastic scrappy jewel box quilt!

Some of the so-called ugly fabric was actually very nice! The person who 'won' the fabric I donated last time really loved the 'border stripe' one and made a nice WH with it. I think I have more of that fabric, and will give it to her.

Doc, about 10-12 years ago Ami Simms sponsored an Ugly Quilt Contest. She has a web site, AmiSimms.Com I think, and you might find the contest quilts there.

Sherry: That sounds like Bonnie Hunter. See quiltville.com to check out her cool scrappy stuff. As I told Doc, some of the 'ugly fabric' was really quite nice. OF the two FQ I was required to use, one was a cheerful sunflower print of nice quality, and the other was downright ugly! It was a cheap blend besides, so I used just a tiny bit of that one. I also requested that in January we donate only 100% cotton FQ.

These little challenges sure stretch our imaginations! That is about the only exercise I've been getting lately. LOL

Congratulations, Pat! :) And you're so good to contribute the blocks to such a great cause. My own small group holiday party is today, and I'm really looking forward to it. :) We're doing it at a restaurant for the first time, since we have a limited number of members with a large enough home. We'll have a gift exchange and present our leader for the past two years with blocks we've secretly made for her. :)

Nuh-uh. Yes, I do now find some links to ugly quilt contests, but Ami Simms is not one of them. Their (her?) contest was for "worst" quilt, and going through the entries, the distinction becomes clear. Many were aesthetically fine, (or would have been) but qualified because of poor craftsmanship, mistakes, ineptitude... one even made the grade simply because of the name it was given.

Every contest (as for "best" quilts) will have its own criteria. If I had the inclination, I might even create my own awards based on things I've seen on the web. But then I'd run the risk of insulting someone who may be proud of their creation, and that's not really what I'm about... Like my mom always said, "If you haven't got anything nice to say about anyone, come sit next to me!" No... wait... that was my aunt...

Actually, I think that quote is from the movie: "Steel Magnolias"...

If it is, the author "borrowed" it from Alice Roosevelt Longworth, same as my aunt...

What a fun party! Congrats on winning the blocks, Pat! It's terrific that you have such an excellent plan for them already.

Ugly FQs? No such thing! ;-)

I was part of an online group that exchanged ugly fabrics once. I could see why the one I received might have been considered ugly, but I thought it was unique--peach colored with fine purple line scribbling on it. There are bits of it in the scrappy quilt that I'm currently hand-quilting. The memory of where that piece came from makes me smile.
