would anyone be interested...

A young girl I know has just started home-schooling, and wants to learn how to quilt. Her Mom has sent me one of those chain letters where you send squares of fabric back to her and then to 4 other people so that in the end Maggie can have enough fabric from all around the world to make a quilt. I don't want to take advantage of the directory by randomly picking some people to ask to participate - but I thought that there might be some of you who'd like to participate? Just reply to this or email me privately and I can try to see that Maggie's chain isn't broken.

I don't want to be part of a chain letter but I'd be happy to pop a few squares into an envelope and send them to her. What colors or designs is she looking for?

Same here, I don't want to do the chain letter part, but I can give Maggie some squares. How many? What size? What color? To her or to you?

Ditto. No chain letter, please, but lots of baseball swap squares available. E-mail me details.

A chain letter will make my friends feel 'obligated'- and that doesn't necessarily mean they'll participate, either. I agree with others that it might not be the best way to accumulate fabrics. Asking the very generous people here at rctq will get you a lot of fabric donations without involving a chain letter. I'd be honored to donate some fabric and even a beginner's quilting book and a few supplies. Just let me know where to send it!

Just like all other responders on the list, I would be happy to send Maggie some fabric squares but do not want to be part of a chain letter.

Count me in the group that would be happy to send her some squares - what size? Any particular color/pattern/theme?

Cindy, these chains never work. I would discourage her from taking part in one. Just plain asking is probably best - honestly. . In message , Musicmaker writes

If you email me off group with her address, I'll be happy to send her a few squares of fabric!

It is illegal to use the United States Postal Service for chain letters.

She's right, here's what it says. There's a lot of disagreement and personal interpretation, I know, just like with copyright laws. But there you have it.

Title 18, United States Code, Section 1302, the Postal Lottery Statute - (in part)

Whoever knowingly deposits in the mail, or sends or delivers by mail:

Any letter, package, postal card, or circular concerning any lottery, gift enterprise, or similar scheme offering prizes dependent in whole or in part upon lot or chance shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both; and for any subsequent offense shall be imprisoned not more than five years.

Please be patient, everyone interested. It's obvious to me that a chain letter is going nowhere. I've emailed the Mom and am awaiting a reply concerning this issue. I've told her that instead of a chain, would she be interested in accepting purple squares from all over the world?

Please wait on her reply - for all I know, she and her daughter want to stick to the chain letter idea, but it may be that that's the only way she could think of to help Maggie get started, in which case I think our offer will be gladly accepted. I'll get back to you all as soon as I know anything more, and I'll personally send everyone the address.

thanks, Musicmaker
