follow up on chalk inks

I told the owner of my lss about the chalk catseye inks and she wrote the company and asked for a statement to print and display by the inks so customers could decide for themselves if they whis to use them or not. The following is the reply she got:

Dear Linda,

Please publish the following:

COLORBOX Fluid CHALK inks are considered archival and safe for keepsake

projects. Although they technically test below "Neutral" on the pH

scale, they are within a range considered acceptable for Scrapbook

applications. The "Chalk" element contained in these inks is a Base

material (non-acidic) and serves to stabilize the inks once dried, much

as the various buffers and fillers used in modern papers are used to

neutralize acidic elements.

As with all stamping inks, make sure they are dry before enclosing them

in your project. If CHALK Inks are used on a coated or glossy paper,

you may want to buff them after drying with a clean tissue to remove any

chalky residue. COLORBOX Fluid CHALK Inks have been used extensively

for scrapbooking with great results and no reported adverse effects. They

are much more fade resistant and permanent than most standard dye inks

normally used for stamping.

I still have a problem with this. I don't like their statement that the product has been used extensively with no adverse effects. Just how "naive" do they think we are. In the scrapbooking/archival safe world a few months or years is nothing. I want it to withstand the next 100 years or more. Just how long has their product been on the market or tested that they can make a statement like that. Sure they are used extensively. Most people (and I was one of them) have this belief that if it is sold by a scrapbook company and sold in a scrapbook store it is automatically acid-free and archival safe. So everyone buys them and most people do not realize they are not acid-free so there are few complaints. Their own website states the product is NOT acid free. I received the same answer you did from the company. I tossed my catseye fluid chalks into the card-making supply box and bought acid free dye-based mini ink pads from Rubber Stampede for my scrapbooks. I do still love the clearsnaps catseye pigment ink pads that are acid-free and will continue to buy and use those those. But it is not worth the risk to my photographs and memories, not to mention all of the money and hours I put into scrapbooking to take a chance on a product that is not acid free. Sandy
