I am a new scrap booker, have been interested for a very long time and finally bought my own scrap booking kit 2 weeks ago. Any ideas how to start, what do I need. I know that you just use your own initiative, but I still need some guidelines.
I had trouble starting when I bought my first kit. In fact it layed around the house a full year before my Creative Memories consultant found me out and offered to get me started. I've been scrapbooking ever since. Soooo, I'd suggest you seek out a local scrapbook store and sign up for a beginning class. They are usually very reasonable in price and you'll get a lot of great ideas to get you started.
You might look into finding a local scrapbook store in your area. They usually have a beginner's class. If not, most of them are more than willing to help you get started. One thing I can suggest is to organize your photos that you're going to use with your kit.
I agree with Lynne and Deb that many LSS have great beginner classes. They are free in my area.
If you don't want to take the route, here is one technique to get you rolling:
Pick 3 pictures from a single event (e.g. birthday)
From your kit, find 3 pieces of paper that compliment each other. This is typically easy with a kit because the papers are designed to mix & match well.
Choose one paper to be your background. The other two are used to accent your page. I think most people start with the concept of "matting" the photos. I started using the solid cardstock colors. As you look at other peoples LOs, you will get adventuresome. As you find your style, you may choose to mat or not to mat.
Place your matted photos on the background, but don't glue yet. Consider a title, a journal box and accents (e.g. stickers). You might choose to write directly on the background or you can put titles, journals, and dates on cardstock. Move these pieces and the pictures around the LO until you like what you see. When you are ready, take each piece and tack it all down.
#1 Rule of scrapbooking -- there are no rules. :-)
If you like it, you succeeded.

Hope to see your first LO soon! Post and show us the results. We'd love to see it. Good Luck! -- Amy L.
Once you chose your paper(s) and photos the next hard part is how to arrange them. In the beginning it is sometimes easier if you follow a scrap map until you get a feel for arrangements. These sites might be of help to get you started
