OT: Need Creative/inexpensive ideas

Every year our Union puts on a dinner for our retireed Firefighter. Used to be one lady did the decorations but she has come to me asking for idea the last few years, and again this year. I'm out of ideas. 2002 we did a very "firefighter"/ patriotic theme due to September 11th. 2003 it was a patriotic theme. 2004 it was a summery theme with the decorations being paper bags rolled down and sunflowers with raffia put in them along with raffia and ribbon to "fill in" We placed these in the center and ends of the tablesas well as in between. Keep in mind these are 8 ft tables. The tables are covered in the white plastic table cloth you can buy at a party store. We do this to keep down the cost as well as ease of clean up. We not only have to set up but take down as well.

This year I'd like a fesh idea/new theme. What we don't want is a "Hawian" theme. (let's face it, this is Arkansas, it will be the 5th of July it will also be at LEAST 95 degrees with 90-95% humidity. No way to make it feel like Hawaii! LOL ) This will be indoors. The food will be as usual (I've tried to talk into a change but these firemen are locked into a routine. But hey I did talk them into letting me take over the dessert. Now it's homemade cobblers, cookies, and this year cake) I digress, sorry. The food will be fried fish, chicken and what normally goes with them. Food does not effect the theme.

I need ideas for decorating the hall where we have it......Ideas ladies? Please, please!!! I''m begging for some inspiration!!! We also have a fireplace/mantel we contend with/have to decorate around......HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have loaded a couple of pictures in my webshots account, in the album titled "retiree dinner", so you can see what we did last year. Not great but they loved it........HEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TIA Kenda (remove nospam to use email addy)

Going along with the summery theme what about a small plastic kiddie pool full of ice with drinks in it. How about buying a few pairs of the those cheapie flipflops and decorating with them. Cheapie plastic sand buckets and shovels from the dollar store. Could you lay a few dollar tree small squirt guns around with water in them and see if anyone notices. I did that one year at a Halloween party and it was pretty near the end of the party when someone thought to squirt with it. That was fun. Since they were small not much water got squirted around.

Christmas in July?

That fireplace just BEGS for a tree and some stockings. And when it's 98 degrees outside, even artificial snow looks very cool.

Jacqui and I were reading this and we came up with a couple:

How about a western party: You can get cowboy hats for $15.95 a dozen, $8.95 for a dozen "red" bandanas and $1.95 for 12 dozen Deputy Sheriff's badges. Jacqui says a few cap guns from Wal-Mart and you're all set. As for the "unlit" fireplace a couple of bales of hay and a saddle on top and you're good to go! Here is the link to the hats and stuff:

Great idea! We do iced tea, lemonade and coffee.....I think I will start an idea folder and put this in it. Who knows one day I might get the guys to go along with soda cans.....Though I plan to put the rest of it with the other ideas and see what the other lady says......I"m sure she'll have a hard time deciding! LOL Wonder how many flipflops we'll need............

Thanks Lynne!

This is a good idea! I'll add this one as to the list. I can see the cap guns being used......your under arrest.....lol

(thinking to self, I'll bet I can get some hay bales from my captain, wonder if my former captain has any saddles, thinks he still makes them. Wonder if we can use one......mutter, mutter) Kenda (remove nospam to use email addy)

How about a vintage firefighter theme. I'm sure your dollar store or party supply store has firefighter toys and decorations and then the streamers can be red, black, and white.

You could ask the local firehouse for items to use as decorations.

For table decorations you could have a fire hat filled with paper and pens for people to write down a word of thanks that you can compile later for the retirees as gifts. (or if you have an RSVP list already you could have them do it ahead of time)

Sounds good. I will add this to my "themes for the retirees" list. I called th lady that used to decorate and she likes the cowboy theme. So I think that's what we'll do. Thanks for all the great ideas ladies!

how about a carnival theme? have games set up and decorate with balloons have a few clowns, name things after the well known rides like the whip and stuff, have a cotton candy machine and do funnel cakes! both inexpensive and you can rent the machines... popcorn... those big honkin lollipops and lots of lights blinking everywhere...

OOOORRRR.... you could do a medieval theme.... get grey paper and draw stones on everything.. make it look like your in a castle, get crowns and staffs and put fake jewels everywhere.... have a moat and a papier mache dragon in it (easy to make) and have a pillaging! can make cheap arrows and bows out of sticks ...kinda a ren faire thing....

Just tell whoever picks out the meals that they just need to switch this years and next years. That solves the whole problem!

How about a Kid's fireman theme party? Since these are retirees - it might be a fun way to go to play it up.

It's really easy/inexpensive to go to your party store - or order from one - Kid's fireman stuff....you can get cheap hats too, $0.99 at our local store.

Get some cheapy games (pin the tail on the dalmation?), have fireman themed favors. Get a kid's firmean b-day cake.

You might be able to get tissue paper fire hydrants, or make some, for center peices.

YOu can use tissue paper or cellophane to make fake fire coming out of the fireplace (this idea is from Melissa) climbing the wall, with fireman decorations putting it out.

My 2 cents -
