A delicate matter

The economy here is such that washable diapers and diaper covers are a critical need. Some of you will remember the awful plastic pants we used over diapers. Stitching prefolded diapers isn't killing me but it certainly is humdrum. Diaper covers? another matter. Elastic doesn't survive laundry very well, hook and loop fasteners like to grab and hang in the wash and aren't very kind to baby skin either. I'd like to find a snap press that would do wee little gentle snaps appropriate to preemie baby diaper covers. I'm not expecting dozens of replies on this but am needing / hoping that someone here will share their success / failure with snap press for these tiny needy babies. Polly

When my daughter was doing the snaps on the diapers that my wife made

- she had free-loan of the snap press from the store where she bought the snaps. I'm not sure what sizes of snaps were available though. John T.

kam snaps are what I the people I know hwo make these use. You can install them with a specilized pair of pliers, I think I a set (along with 100 or so snaps) for $30 or so. Wouldn't want to set a whole bunch at once with one, but it's fine for a couple at a time.

snap tape is also a workable solution. (It's what my mom used, she's still got some of it...)

The only ones I've used recently have been Snap Source, which went on nicely, but they're a bit spendy at about $0.30/snap. And I have not tried them on something as thick as you're probably doing.

How about doing a buttonhole on a piece of cotton or poly twill tape, doubled, included in a seam, and a button big enough for human hands? Something like an 18L shirt button runs about $4/2 gross (288 buttons) at Wawak.

I do thank you kindly for your ideas. I dug around on the net and found some who make stacks of these and found a good source for a real snap press and affordable price for the snaps. Now what I need is someone who doesn't sew but would like to help. Maybe Mr. Esther? Polly

I don't know whether you are looking at metal or plastic snaps. I much prefer using diapers with plastic snaps. I have had trouble with babies reacting to the metal, especially in the diaper area since it gets wet.

My favorite newborn diapers were home made ones I got at a yard sale. They were fitted diaper flannel with a terrycloth soaker panel that ran down the middle, sandwiched between the terrycloth layers and zigzagged into position from the outside. They had hidden elastic at the legs which kept the covers cleaner. The terrycloth panel didn't go all the way to the top, so I folded the tops down a a number of times for a newborn fit. I was still able to use them at 6 months, but doubled.

If the diapers are likely to be hand washed and hung to dry, then the old style large, one layer birdseye diapers, not prefolds might be easier for moms to care for once they learn how to fold them. They also cost less to dry in a dryer.
