A great day Fabric Shopping & weather

It's been a great day for weather today. Low 60's and sunny. So DH and I took a trip to Adams,MA. It's in the NW corner of Massachusetts. Went to a store call Interior Alternative because I need new clothes for my windows. DH just painted the bedroom a beautiful shade of blue with white trim. Looks fabulous with my wide pine floor. We had checked in Joann's earlier in the week to get an idea of what he liked. The fabric we both agreed on was $24.95 a yard and I needed a minimum of 15 yards. Just a bit high for my blood. It has to be special ordered and I'm not that patient. So we decided to go to this place, it sells Waverly seconds, closeouts and overruns. They have more fabric than you could possible see in one day. We couldn't get exactly what we had originally chosen, but came up with something close. The price was marked $6.95 a yard. The lady started measuring with her neat roller thingy. All of a sudden it hit me that I didn't know what the repeat was. So she measured it for me and I figured I need to get extra.I figured the cost and asked her to cut 20 yards. At that point the nice lady said that it was on sale for 50% less. So the fabric cost me (Trumpets blowing, Flags Waving) $69.60. I also got thermal lining that was on sale for $2.30 a yard. They also have a store on ebay(that doesn't look like much) and another in Manhattan. If you would like to see the fabric go to

60's, in Massachussetts? I grew up there and I remember the winters being bitterly cold. Is it a heat wave or the beginning of Spring?

Freaky weather! We go hot, cold, snow, rain. Tonight and tomorrow are for high winds, Saturday and Sunday in the low 20's. The entire winter has been this way. Great on the utilites. We have used very little oil for heat and have paid an outrageous price for what we do use. I'll take these lovely days anytime. Juno

Woooohoooo, Juno! How fabulous you must feel...and just think what it would cost if you had to pay someone to custom make those same window treatments.

DH had made that suggestion and I shot it down so fast he didn't know what hit him. I told him that I do my own windows, always have and hope I always can. We've lived in this house 42 years and the only curtains and drapes that have ever been put up have come from my effort. I have the time and energy and love making them. It's a point of pride for me. When my mom was still with us I did many of her curtains and drapes and many times would give her some I made for myself because she loved them. Juno

Her in PDX we're expecting record overnight cold for the next few days, somewhere in the mid-to-high twenties, accompanied by 50 MPH winds. Ugh! I just turned back off all the outside faucets I had turned on a week ago.

It has been such a strange winter. I was walking around in a shirt and light sweater today and I know tomorrow I probably won't be able to go outside at all. The wind makes it so hard for me to breathe. I hope you can get those faucets back on soon.No one needs what you are expecting tomorrow.

I think you 're correct Beverly. It is some kind of crewel design. I'm not good on the history of designs. It is very striking and the colors are so vivid.I'll do my best to get pics up. My bedroom is very large and needs a very strong print. As you can tell by reading the information, the repeat is 36 inches. I wish I could put full length drapes in my home but that's not possible. I have to keep as many things off the floor as I can because of my asthma. Can't have anything that might be a big dust collector. The windows are large though so the pattern show look great in the room. BTW the room was paneled and DH painted it. This is not the first time he's painted paneling. It's a lot of work but the results are lovely. Juno

I'm no expert, but I love to work on crewel, and the design of your fabric does look like a couple of kits I've done. Here is some information on Jacobean Crewel:

I'm sorely tempted to paint the wood paneling in my bedroom, but have a huge problem with covering real wood with paint. DD and I put it up when we first bought this house, I wish we had not...

Juno, I love that fabric! It will be gorgeous with your new blue and white walls.

By the way, it matches almost everything in my house, which was based on an old Waverly pattern that has been discontinued, so I'm glad to see this. Thank you for bringing it to my attention; it is just what I was looking for to cover some loveseats!

It's been a very warm winter in almost all the United States, Kirsten. It was 60 here for the last couple of days, too. Not to worry, though, we're sending Juno (and my daughter, who goes to school near Boston) some more frigid weather. :)

Thanks for the sites, it sure looks similar to me. They are beautiful.

My problem with length comes because I have baseboard hot water heat. To end a drape just above the heat looks awkward. It looks like someone walking around with pants that are just a bit to short in my mind. The largest window is on the longest wall and it would mean covering half the heat. That does 2 things. It shuts out the heat and no matter how much you vacuum there is a lot of dust in the fins and it ends up hidden on drapes and every time you move the drape it spreads the dust throughout the room. I can't avoid dust but I do my best to avoid giving it a collection place.

If you don't want it, why live with it. Paint is reversible. Have you considered pickling. That would add color. My friend, Nancy, painted the paneling in her family room with great results. She did it in a cream color and it has added a lot of great texture to the walls. She has a great decorating sense and is not afraid to try something most people would never do. Give it a thought. I can't wait to get these curtains made. They do have to wait a couple of weeks though. Next week I have a houseful of grandchildren and the beginning of the following week we are going to visit another daughter for a couple of days. That does give me time to plot out just what I want to do and how.

Karen, Since you are coming East in May why not consider going to the store. It's about 30 miles north of I 90 at the Lee Exit. That's exit 2 on the Mass Turnpike. The place will blow your mind. There was a lady in there yesterday, with her decorator, picking out fabric for chairs and drapes. There is also a great little diner in Adams called Miss Adams. Good lunches. Juno

That's not a bad idea, Juno. An even greater incentive to drive there!

There is also a store located in the Furniture Outlet Mall in Morgantown, Pa. at exit 298 on the PA Turnpike. I know....just moved into a new place and made all of my window treatments, pillow shams, pillows, etc. Great place, and they're very helpful! They will call other stores if they don't have what you want.

High-waters!

I hear ya' on the whole dust thing. My younger DD has multiple allergies, dust being at the top of the list. We had mostly hard-easy-to-clean surfaces in her bedroom, Roll-up shades with a little trim, etc.

You almost give me the courage to try it. ;-) This summer's projects are already set, I'm having the exterior of the house painted, a new concrete patio poured, and *maybe* (if it fits the budget), hardwood floors in the living room to replace the w-to-w carpet. That's enough disruption for one year...

Enjoy, plotting is half the fun!

Speaking of which, did any of you watching the Westminster Kennel dog show earlier this week think that the pants worn by the handler of the winning dog were too short? They looked too short by several inches to me, but then I read that she bought that suit, an Armani, just for the finals. So now I'm thinking I just must not be 'with it', fashion-wise. [sigh]

I have always disliked floor-length draperies for that very reason. I know they keep out the winter drafts, but I have always felt it better to insulate the windows, and keep the curtains to just below the sill apron. BTW, since dh and I both have allergies, plus we live in a warm climate, all my curtains nowadays are lightweight cotton or blend, permanent press, and able to be unthreaded from the rods, put through the washer and dryer, and threaded right back on the rods and put up again.

If you want to do it, I suggest you clean it thoroughly then give it a coat of clear varnish before you paint it. That way, the paint color will not get deep into the wood, and if you ever want to strip it again it will be relatively easy.

I've never been with it. I want my pants to come down far enough that I'm not walking around with my socks or stocking showing, comfortable shoes and pretty top or tee's. I haven't got the inclination to be fashionable, just very neat. Do you think it's from 50 years of being a nurse and needing clothing I can work in, not be fashionable in. Juno

I had not heard of that trick, I may just give it a test on a hidden corner and see how it works out. Thanks!
