AAAARRRGGGHHH!

This IS on topic, really! Have you ever had one of those days when you wished the customer would call and cancel?

Oh, what a night! Glad I don't have THAT to deal with very often! First off, I had to ring my sister and break the sad news that there was no way I could expand her sexy dress pattern to her new measurements! Because of the shapes of the pieces, I can't size it up to an 18 from a

14 without HOURS of work and extra fittings, for which she really doesn't have time... then the real trouble started about 2 am, just as I was dropping off to sleep... James was ikk all over the bathroom floor! (Hay - it could have been MUCH worse - he's sleeping in the sewing room at the moment!). Altogether he was sick 5 times, had me out of bed 7 or 8 times, and is distinctly peely-wally today! I'm left with a headache...

I finally dropped off about 9 am this morning, and had nightmares about tape measures... Then the doorbell rang at eleven! ARGH! I'd totally forgotten the bride was bringing the larger child bridesmaid and the page boy over for measurements! I had to rouse DH and put him on tea and entertaining duties, scramble into my clothes, send James to get dressed, and sort out the paperwork for the measurements! Luckily, there being 2 mums in the crowd, everyone was most understanding and sympathetic, and since James is a sort of muddy pale fawn rather than his usual rosy cheeked self, everyone could see he is far from well. DH and James kept the groom busy with plastic aircraft models, Richard the page boy played with James's Playmobil space ship, and little Susannah the bridesmaid fell in love with the cat!

Just when you meant to have time to tidy the living room, have a pot of tea waiting, and all the paperwork lined up and waiting in proper professional manner, something comes along and shoots you in the bathroom floor! Thank heaven for NICE brides!

Little Sis has just phoned with the news that she has found another nice pattern for a new sexy dress, and was most apologetic that it's labelled 'Easy'! Oh, such faith! Sisters know how to boost your ego, don't they!

*pat pat* There, now, Kate. Have a nice cup of tea and put your feet up. You've had way too much to handle this day. Tomorrow will be better. Poor James. Poor Kate. The only good part is that when children get so sick so fast, they also get better fast, and he probably got rid of whatever it was that was upsetting him.

Another example of the importance of washing machines. ;-) After a bout like that, there's bound to be things in dire need of a good soak.

oh, pooor kate! poor james! i hope you are both feeling better!!

i spent last night with my DD, and a neice (age 10 ) and nephew (age 8) making polar fleece hats. they came out very cute,we made the athlete hat from easy hats by timberlane press. an old pattern i had forgotten i had, and used polar fleece scraps. the kids had a ball cutting out the pattern pieces and sewing together. my niece asked for a sewing machine for christmas. i have two old singers that need repairs (i had to buy them, they needed good homes), so i will see what i can do about getting one up and running for her.....

Oh yes! DEFINITELY all gone! Noisily, and in wretched discomfort (turns out that like me, he's one who goes NOT grue easily!). I think it was something he ate, and have blamed the tomato ketchup, which has gone in the bin.

Nope! Oddly enough the only thing he grued on was the bathroom floor! Luckily, I like vinyl bathroom floors, due to the inaccuracy of boys hitting the loo when widdling, so that was easy to clean. He splashed the door and the skirting board and the bottom of the radiator, but missed the hall carpet, the towels on the rail, his own pj's... Cleaver lad! Not like a previous time, when I ended up changing his bed completely twice: 2 pillows, 2 sets of pillowcases, 2 duvets and duvet covers, 2 sheets, 2 underbankets, 2 pairs of pj's and the bedroom carpet! Or one time when DH went in and picked up wailing baby and it exploded at both ends, resulting in both him and it needing a bath, complete new set of bedclothes, and a severe scrubbing of bedroom carpet!

DH has been a real Trojan, mopping the floor, fielding the lad while I sorted stuff out, and when I went back to bed for a couple of hours as my head was pounding like someone was trying to break out using a Kango hammer!

Tomorrow we hope to stencil nice stars and space ships on the boy's walls, stick up luminous planets on the ceiling, and get some shelf supports in... With luck, we'll get the curtain rail up so I can fix the curtain hems. Then I shall make another duvet cover for him (I have some nice plain navy poly cotton sheeting) and we can stencil luminous fabric paint stars and stuff to match the bedroom walls! I did buy one set of duvet cover & pillowcase to match the curtains. It will seem odd to be hanging curtains I didn't make, but they were very cheap (£13 the pair in the sale), and exactly what he wanted.

That sounds good! I keep threatening James with sewing lessons, but he's resisted so far! Maybe next time he loses his hat, I can tell him he only gets a new one if he makes it himself... Then I'll cut his hair! ;)

I think this is a sign of "growing up" -- if a child can be cognizant of all that, while heaving away.

We know Alan is a prince among men. My own DH would be gone with the wind, slightly green around the gills. He's no good at these times at all. And at other times....but after 25+ years, there's no way I'd start over.

That does sound like fun! You have enough on your plate without the curtains, anyway. I have "store-bought" curtains in my kitchen. They were overpriced, cheap fabric, but just the right thing for a newly refurbished kitchen (fresh coat of paint and handles) so I bit the bullet and bought. Sometimes, it's the right thing to do. ;-)

Poor Kate!! I'm so sorry all this happened in a limited time span (actually, regardless of how little time it took, I'm sorry that everything went wonky!). However, you are always a trooper and get what needs done completed.

You are so fortunate to have a hubby who can step up when needed in cases of "childus vomitus" My DH is a sympathy puker . When DS had the rotovirus (his first Christmas, I think), DH did a valiant job....even when DS threw up on him. But, the option was either take the puking kid, or clean the bedroom up....so.....

Fortunatley, that was the only time we've had major tummy troubles....Rebekah seems to have gotten over her problems as well, so hopefullly everything has stablized...........

take a long soak with something from LUSH, enjoy a nice cuppa, and get some sleep!

Poor Kate, you did have a rough night. (Just be thankful you only have one kid, I remember some nights when BOTH kids were urping alternately)

As far as curtains go, I have often found it is cheaper to buy curtains for places like kitchens and bathrooms than it is to make them. Not being overfond of unnecessary work, that is what I do.

I really needed both the ego boost and the giggle this caused!

James declared this morning that he felt like it had never happened, and please could he have some breakfast! He's busy eating a ham sandwich...

I'm lucky in that it takes major food poisoning or something to make Alan grue! There was NO way I could leave James, having once got him past the obstacle to the loo, and Alan was our rescue party! The problem for this sort of thing is that there is really only enough room in our bathroom for one person at a time, as it's slightly under 6 feet square! Once you fit in a bath, a wash basin and a loo, a radiator and a towel rail, there's not a lot left for spare people!

I am a sympathy gruer most of the time, but find I can usually cope with kids: must be the mother instinct taking over!

Little Sis is dropping off her new pattern today, and this week will be divided between dress and cake making! I also have to fit in a shopping trip to get Ma's Christmas present, as we are going up to he for Sunday Lunch next weekend.

Since I didn't have James until I was almost 38, I thought one perfect one was quite enough! I'm not naturally very maternal, but he WAS a lovely baby! And most of the time he's still lovely.

I don't mind a good bargain, which is why I bought these ones! They were less than half price in the sale, and match the duvet set I also bought in the sale: NASA space ships all over them that glow in the dark! It just feels odd, after 20+ years of not owning a bought curtain AND making them for others! It's just that I couldn't have bought the fabric for the price!

I don't have curtains in kitchen or bathroom: just naked window! Both look out the back, with 150 feet of garden before you get to a paddock, then fields in a 'designated' area. NOOOOOO chance of urban sprawl catching up to us: were only got electricity up here in the 50's (one house didn't have it until after we moved here in 1984), and there's still no mains drainage. The bathroom does have frosted glass!

I gave up on kitchen curtains a long time ago. Currently, I have over a dozen of Danielle's plastic stained-"glass" creations hanging from clear fishing line instead. They make the area look finished and still let the light in.

I agree that some windows don't need the complete tailored, gorgeous curtains. Danielle's room sports the old college stand-by: twin sheets hemmed to curtains with a deep valance. It was the only way to match all those Barbie sheets without changing the curtains every linen change. Of course this works better in where I am (the desert) since it only gets really cold for a few months.

Mom used to tell her friends that she never needed to wonder: if I hadn't thrown up, I wasn't sick!

It's probably just as well that I never had any children. I vaguely recall that I was also a bad shot -- at least mother always put down a lot of newspapers before she brought in the washbowl!

a good movie to watch while relaxing -- here it

Aaahhh... (Me sinks into luxury!) Just what I needed! ;)

Oh yes! I asked him how he felt yesterday morning, and he grinned and said, As if it never happened! His appetite was sensible of not quite back to its usual voracious form!

Those sound fun! I hate clutter at the windows, however. I'm happy with a crowded windowsill, but like to see out. There is only garden there, so no worries!

A friend of mine used a pair of white embroidered cotton voile saris, held to the curtain pole with fancy mock wrought iron clips, and draped over matching tie back hooks in her dramatic black and white bathroom. Looks fantastic, but she has big tall windows!

Whew! Glad your DS's better and all is past, Kate. Odd how it always seems to happen in the chill of the year. Had almost forgotten what that's like since the DGKs live some distance away. Hope it's all over for you for the rest of the winter . another Sharon
