Academic gown question

I have the robe which my father wore when he graduated from university in the 1930s. It is the traditional black robe with long sleeves, but I have always wondered why the label inside the back yoke is put in upside down. The label reads: Northam Robe Maker, by special appointment to the University of London, 9 Henrietta Street, Strand. Is there some quirky historical reason why a label would deliberately be sewn in the wrong way? I wore it when I graduated from university in 1971, and my son wore it for his graduation yesterday. Some families pass down wedding gowns, we have this robe.

I don't know about the label sewed in upside down. I just went to look at ours, but neither mine or DS's have theirs sewn like that, of course, we are in the US. The tradition of passing it down through the generations is great in my opinion, I'd never thought about it. Wonderful idea. Emily
