Add a Fly to Sweatpants?

As I've gotten older, and am more and more confined to my apartment by a chronic illness, I've taken to wearing sweatpants around the house, because they are warm and comfortable.

But none of my sweatpants have a fly. And sometimes I wear them underneath roomy cargo pants, sort of like long johns. And then the lack of a fly is a real nuisance.

Before I sit down at the sewing machine and try to figure out how to add a fly to my sweatpants, I thought it might be worth a try to see if someone else had already figured it out and has a pattern they could share with me.

I have never actually done this, and you're going to have a hard time. Sweats leave no allowance in the seams to work with, and you'll need more fabric to make the fly. And if you want to open up the waist band, be very careful of the elastic. Some is not sewn into the band, and will disappear on you. Here's a quick solution. Take a couple of old sweats and resign them to the *under* garments. Open the seam as long as you need to the waistband, and sew a close matching woven fabric about 1 1/2" wide to each seam. Press the left side (if I remember correctly) under, and the right straight out to lie under the left. Add a couple of snaps or velcro to hold the fly shut. That should give you access when wearing your cargo pants. Any good pants pattern with a fly will help orient you.
