anyone dealt with PointNorth performance fabrics?

Hi, Just wondering if anyone has any experience with ordering online from PointNorth (pointnorth.co.uk). I contacted them via the website to ask for a fabric recommendation and haven't yet had a response. Maybe I'm just impatient. Liz

Probably! ;) I've always found it easier to ring them: they are very helpful and do know their stuff, and I just find it easier to natter through the query rather than try to ask everything in an email. Service has also always been excellent. I've dealt with them both before and after the take over (original owners sold on so they could retire), and the service has remained excellent and the business expanded since the take over.

Very likely that's what happened. Good luck!

What do you want to make?

PointNorth has a fabric called Transpire stretch poly, which sounds fine, but then maybe the cheaper Aquaduct, which they describe as t-shirting, would do instead.

Maybe I should just have asked alt.sewing, but now I'm a bit concerned about their lack of responsiveness. But if you've had good experience with them that's reassuring.

Hi Liz,

Can't comment on the fabric, however, I can comment on the maternity factor.

I'm presently 6.5mths pregnant, and all my maternity trousers are of the extremely large waist type, gathered up at the back only with button hole elastic. Whilst having loops of elastic dangling round inside your trousers isn't too enthraling, it does make life very adjustable, and from your point of view, make constuction of suitable clothing much much easier. You could also look at draw string waist enclosures as an alternative.

Having just come back from holiday myself, I must also warn that I found walking any great distance tiring and somewhat uncormfortable. The bump sticks out further now and feels awkward when I walk. Sadly my pelvis seems to be giving up early which is not helping :(

Good luck with the clothes, and enjoy your holiday.

Regards,

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

The pattern I'm using has both the stretch panel and the buttonhole elastic. I've made one pair of shorts so far and they seem pretty comfortable, so I just wanted something in more appropriate fabric.

I'm sure you're right about walking being tiring and uncomfortable. But we planned this holiday before I got pregnant, and already gave up on the 7-day walk we'd really wanted to do. Now we're only planning short walks, and I guess I just want to make them as comfortable as I can and hope for the best!

Anyway, PointNorth got back to me promptly about my second email and offered to send samples, so I'm happier now :-)

Hi Liz,

At least we planned and booked this holiday knowing I was pregnant and running out of energy. What I found on holiday was that walking around for an hour or so then having a rest stop (rest, food and water!) kept me going for longer.

I'm glad you've found a comfy shorts pattern, and hope you have a lovely holiday - just think of me because I'll be 38 weeks pregnant at Xmas!

Many thanks Angela,

I have my first maternity blouse cut out and waiting to be made - just not got much enthusiasm :( I need to get it done though as I'm rapidly expanding out of my normal blouses!

I have three pairs RTW maternity trousers, 2 RTW maternity bloues & 3 RTW maternity t -shirts of varying styles. So I need to make 2 or 3 more maternity blouses, and some night shirts.

Pregnancy has certainly caused a major reduction in my sewing output - oh well - perhaps I'll feel more like it when I finally get on maternity leave.

Thanks very much Angela. I'm pretty pleased about it myself :-)

First baby? Then sew now while you can. Nothing in your life (perhaps short of becoming a paraplegic) will change your schedule as much as your first baby. I remember being unable to find time to even shower.
