Anyone have an Elna Lotus?

Hi, I found an Elna Lotus at the local "antique" mall the other day. It looks like it's from the 70's or 80's judging by the paint colors of white and chocolate. No foot pedal or power cord.

Does anyone here have one of these, and if so is it any good for quilting? (I'm not too picky).

Don't really "need" it, just liked how small it was and was curious.

Please don't send me to ebay; my hubby "banned" me from there after I got a really good deal on an iMac we don't need!

Thanks SueB

"In 1968, the Elna Lotus was launched, a compact sewing machine with a unique design. Today you can find the Elna Lotus in the Design Collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA)."

I have heard good things about this machine, but I can't remember from who! It is cute . I personally wouldn't buy it if it wasn't complete unless you found a source for spare parts in advance and checked the prices on them. You don't want to invest in it then find you cant get the items you need to make it functional. I do have a "thing" for old sewing machines, but I try not to buy them unless I am sure it a) works, or b) I can get the parts to make it work at a reasonable price.

My DMIL has one that she carted all over the world in her purse (I think she first saw it in Switzerland, finally bought in Bahrain!). I've sewn on it, and it handles fabric beautifully -- it would make an excellent class machine, especially the model with zigzag and "special stitch". With the small size of the area to the right of the needle, however, I don't think you'd want to use it for quilting other than something like a baby quilt. Would be great for sewing tops, however.

I'd certainly check on the availability of parts before considering this particular machine -- I believe I was told that the Lotus tends to wear out a piece in the bobbin case area, and trying to find a replacement piece is largely a matter of luck.
