One of my sons climbs. AND had the nerve to send me a picture of him standing -- with his feet showing -- within inches of a sheer drop-off with teensy-tiny cars waaaaaaaay down below. When the nausea subsided, I informed him that it was really unwise to send me such pictures.

Since that time I have on occasion asked him what he's been doing, and he tells me "going to movies, out to dinner and That-Which-I-Am-Never-to-Mention-to-My-Mother."

Alan used to climb, still walks, and had a motorbike when I first knew him... No doubt James is taking after him! I've known folk who swam, dived, sky-dived, flew, or did other 'dangerous' stuff all my life, and it really doesn't bother me (I've also climbed, and flown a light plane a couple of times... Fun! :) ). I went out for a short while with a bloke who was a cave diver! Now THAT is dangerous!

Crossing the road is more dangerous than any of these so-called high risk sports. I worry about Alan driving more than this stuff, even though more folk in my life have died in air accidents than in any of these other things. Oddly, I never worry about flying!

I have a problem with heights - even relatively low ones. But I have flown in many different planes, from 2-seaters on up, and I much prefer the ones where I can open the window. No logic there, but that's how it is.

My other son did have some friends who were caving in Utah, and came to a bad end. One friend decided to stay outside, though he usually went to this cave. The others went in and couldn't get out before the air ran out. It was one of those that you had to swim underwater to get into. A tragic end to a group of friends.

Isn't the bathtub a more dangerous place, statistically speaking, than the road?
