Baseball Pants - SOS

I'm in a bind, so I'm cheating and asking for advice instead of Googling for a couple of days.

My son is playing baseball, and the pants that came with his uniform are made of such terribly cheap polyester that one go round in the washing machine created a huge "pull" about 2" inches wide, across the entire front of one leg. (I'm so ticked.....) They're quite ruined.

I can grab a pattern and make a pair of simple pants in an afternoon, but what fabric should I use? Think white fabric, hot noon games, grass and dirt. (UK folks - pretend it's soccer-football.)

Thanks for your help!

Cotton or poly-cotton drill if it doesn't need to stretch. If it does, hunt up some summer weight cavalry twill. It's wool, but light weight.* Make sure it's washable BEFORE you buy, and washing a non-washable wool will ruin it.

*As worn by cavalry officers in the Indian Army in days of yore...

Store-bought baseball pants and the uniforms provided by our schools to their teams are universally 100% polyester double knit. For reference:

do need to stretch, and because they are traditionally light colored or even white, they need to be able to stand up to repeated laundering.

I believe both JoAnn's and Hancock's carry the appropriate fabric in an assortment of colors. If you're tempted to experiment with alternative fabrics and fiber contents I suggest watching the "Seinfeld" episode where George outfits his baseball team in cool, comfortable, breatheable cotton.

I did end up going with a polyester blend. They're so much nicer than the cheap pair that came from the league! And I made three pair, just in case I get behind in laundry. (The other Moms will be so jealous!)

I even modified the pattern successfully. It originally had a snap front, with belt loops on the wait, but I just put an elastic waist band on it. That's what the faulty pair had.

It's not much - but it came out right so I was thrilled with myself.

Angrie, dammit

I haven't seen that episode - I don't really like Seinfeld. What happened?

Succinctly (which is really not the point of any Seinfeld episode), they started out playing like mad in their cool, comfortable cotton. Then they started to sweat and their uniforms started to sag and cling and bind and chafe, costing them the game.
