Bernia 802 Newbie/SOS Foot won't drop low enough

Hi ladies. Need your expertise. I have my mom's old Bernia 802. Loved it in my Home Ec class 20 some odd years ago. But haven't used it since it has been in my possession. Had it "well checked" about a year ago and then put it away. Needed to pull it out for a school project due Monday; Heritage Dolls. Anyhow, I've got it threaded, etc. and come to find that the pressure foot does not drop down to hold the fabric in place like I am accustomed or recalling. It's about 1/4 inch or so from the fabric. Any ideas why this is? And how do I rectify this? I only have the one "original" foot...and it wasn't like this before the "well check" and regrettably, the place is no longer in business to go back to...

I was about to suggest that you may have the wrong foot on it but if you have only the one foot, I don't guess that's the case - unless the fix-it place put the wrong foot on. How brave are you? It could be that the lever that raises and lowers the foot is not working. Do some gentle jiggling on the lever. If that fails, you might open the side of the Bernina and inspect the lever mechanism and see if it might be hanging up somehow. Polly (far from expert, just hoping to help)

Is it possible that the feed dogs may be in the 'dropped' position?

AH! Hey there, Irene. I figured you were bailing the basement and wouldn't be able to help. How's it going? Polly

My old Pfaff has a switch/lever up under the yoke near the presser bar that is used to keep the presser foot from going all the way down to the feed dogs and is used for darning and free hand quilting. Check to see if your old Bernina has a similar device.

Hi Polly,

The muck is now dry, so we're shoveling instead of bailing LOL

It's coming along, very slowly...We've got one end (about 1/3 of the basement cleaned out well, including the floor (lots of Pine-Sol), si we can use it as a staging area for the rest of the stuff. DH set up some longl tables to use to inspect & clean stuff and unpack boxes, plastic storage containers, etc. which is much easier to do sitting down or standin up at a table. It going to be a long weekend but we have more help coming over tomorrow so things should move right along. Still have lots and lots to throw out and clean.

But, since things have dried up, at least we can walk down there without slipping and sliding.... I almost went down on my 'new' hip last weekend during a cleaning session, thankfully DD's SO was close by and has quick reflexes...and did a quick catch to literally save my butt...

DH has also made a path to the sewing machine stash and repair corner, so tomorrow I'm going to inspect the damage and put aside what's fixable and what is not and take pictures...who know maybe we can at least claim some of this stuff as a tax loss.

Today I got a wonderful surprise at work from "Santa and his elves!" We lost all of our Christmas decorations, including the tree, and when I got back from lunch found a Christmassy- wrapped box on my desk consisting of notes from Santa, and holding ornaments and money to buy lots of 'trimmings.' I feel very blessed tonight!

Irene, I hadn't heard about your problem because, besides being off-line recently & also not receiving alt.sewing for a few days. I am very glad you are getting everything back in order and hope you will be able to retrieve most of your sewing stash. Thankfully, you didn't fall and injure yourself. Emily
