Bernina 1001

Hello,

I am in search of a Bernina sewing machine. I want a good basic, sturdy sewing machine, with which I can sew garments and/or drapes, etc. I have a Singer Futura II, which I love, but is unfortunately getting old. Lately, I have been using my friend's Bernina 1001 and I really like it (although I would rather have a drop-in bobin like my Singer has). It looks like the 1008 is very similar, and has had good reviews in this forum. Can anyone tell me how 1008 compares to 1001? Also, I would like to buy a used one, but can you recommend a website with prices of new Bernina machines for comparison.

Thank you very much!

Odile

The best place to find any sewing machine is a good reputable dealer, IMHO. A good reputable dealer usually has used machines for sale, which have been serviced and ready for a lengthy time of service. Besides, he/she has the different attachments, and notions needed as well. Emily

You're probably right, Emily. But a lot of us live in areas where there are no dealers, reputable or not. One of the few dealers of any kind in my area is at the local quilt shop. There is a local fabric shop that carries a different brand. These stores only carry one brand of machine, and they don't deal in used machines at all. Joann's is the other choice along with Walmart and Kmart.

I've been wanting a new or new to me serger and will probably end up going on line, but I wish I could just go to a good reputable dealer.

:Hi Odile, I have the Bernina 1001, and to my knowledge the 1008 is exactly the same machine. I discussed it with a Bernina/Pfaff dealer awhile back and she agreed with me. The 1001 was released over 15 years ago and was so well received that years later they released the 1008. I went to the Bernina site just to be sure, and the 1008 has the exact same appearance, features, and front-loading bobbin that I have.

It's a great mach> Hello,

I have a 1005. The 1008 has a few more stitch patterns, but that is all. I think the 1001 has a few less than the 1005, but I'm not entirely sure which ones.

Used and abused in schools all over the UK for many years... I've sewn through scales cut from Coke cans on one, and it did neither it no me any harm, though I wouldn't recommend it as a daily practice! ;)

Mine was a gift from a downsizing sewing pal. I got it for use with the kids (I have several donated to the cause), and the kids love using it as it is so deeply non-temperamental: does exactly as it says on the can. :D
