birthday party prince costume patern ? fabriccs ?

hello. I am looking for ideas and advice for ....

a prince costume to be worn to a "royal fairy tale princess " costume birthday party for 4-6 yr olds.

the princess of honor preview shows a very shiny white dress with lots of pink and bottom made of the ?____? fine net like fabric

so i was hoping for some ideas for a 4 yr old childs "prince" pattern to use and fabrics to use for that prince costume ? probably do not want to pstage the princes of honor though... and of course simplicity always seems best idea for such projects

thank you for any ideas and thoughts, rob

I would go for a pair of elastic waisted trousers gathered at the knee, knickerbocker style.Your favorite trouser pattern could be used to make them, or use a simple pyjama pattern like Simplicity 4381. You could gather them onto a band of fabric and tie the ends or into an elasticated cuff, it realy depends on how fussy you are. If you have a shirt white or other wise I would think about making a Jabot/ fall of lace on an elastic or velcro, to slip under the shirt collar. I definatly remember my brother having a lace dress shirt front for christmas in the late 1970's he thought he looked the biz but he was about 5 at the time! I don't know of you want to go so far as to make a coat but if you don't a long gillet/ waistcoat with braid on would look the part.If not think of making a simple cloak on a velcro fastening. I have found a couple of vintage patterns which might give you an idea

Thanks for the reply and help Claire,

I may cobble something together using ideas from the helpful replies. the prince patterns ot there are very similar to a set of pirate and medieval costume pattern i picked up long ago.

thanks again for the help, rob

For the helpful links and ideas. these patterns are very similar to a pirate pattern and a medieval Wizards and other characters pattern i have, I may try to cobble something together from those existing patterns.

for example the 5412 - Doublet is similar to a shortened pirate coat combined with sleeves from my wizards tunic with some slight mods of course.

Thanks again for the help, rob

You're welcome, "cobbled together" costumes are often the very best kind. ;-)

Cobbled together is a great discription, I think as long as he gets the overall feel of whathe wants to represent sticking to one pattern or design isn't nessecary. A cloak, trousers in somthing rich looking prahaps an offcut of velour or satin and hat with a feather any 4 year old would be thrilled. IMHO My niece loved her box of assorted dressing up clothes that I made for her and not one of them was based on a pattern,I just picked up a piece of fabric and said to myself tunic dress........ wings..... gathered skirt etc. The free form of ideas was very liberating. same pattern also provided a lion costume (jacket with hood with ears, trousers with tail, made from fur fabric [the hood and the tuft on the end of the tail were made from darker, longer fur]), a donkey (different ears and a main of bullion fringe inserted in the hood seam), a polar bear (white fur, no tail!), and Aragorn costume (tunic, 'waistcoat', and a cloak made from a half circle), all three kings, and a couple of angels!

The costumes now provide the backbone of the village school costume cupboard!
