Bobbin thead problem

My Singer model 5050 has developed a bobbin thread problem, in that I have to try up to a dozen times to raise the bobbin thread. I've removed the bobbin repeatedly and detected nothing that indicates that it is the source of the problem. I've rethreaded the machine several times, thinking that that might be causing the problem. I'm eventually successful in raising the bobbin thread, but it's very perplexing, considering that it used to take one attempt to raise it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Does it sew ok after you get the thread up ? Sounds like it should be skipping alot ?

Some simple ideas : ==============

1 - Try a new needle ? (old one may be bent )

2 - Is the needle inserted correctly ? flat side faces rear of machine ?

3 - have you made any changes to how you pull the thread up ? like holding the needle thread in front of the machine instead of behind the presser foot .

4- Have enough bobbin thread dangling off the bobbin so the end of the thread does not get lost in the bobbin case ?

5 - cleaned thread fluff out of the bobbin area ?

I am not familiar with that machine but i suppose it is like many others...

where you ... a. insert a newly filled bobbin in the case b. then pull a couple of inches off the bobbin and close the bobbin plate , c. then thread the needle and pull the loose thread toward rear of the machine d. then manually turn the hand wheel/crank in a counter clockwise fashion (some would say roll it toward the sewer) e. the needle enters the bobbin case and comes up with the needle thread looped around the bobbin thread ?

Betty,

I had a similar problem. Seems I was using the wrong size bobbin. Even a tiny difference in size can make a difference.

Just my 2 cents worth :-)
